On a road trip around Beaujolais, we chose to stay at the Logis de France, Le Villon Hotel and dined at night in the restaurant. During a 9 week holiday in France , we rated our dining experiences and ended up selecting eight as "memorable". Our night at Le Villon we rated the best.
As we have found at many Logis de France hotels, the accom may not be 5 star but the dining experience is superb. Jany-Joël et Dominique Cancela made us very welcome on a cold April evening.
As well as a choice of menus ranging from €21 to 53 ( seven courses), there is an a la carte with entrees € 7.20 to 16.20; Mains - Fish: € 12.80 to 16.80 - Viands: € 13.80 to 18.90 ; Fromage €6.90 Fromage blanc €3.60. Children's meals € 10.00.
Wine choice is good with local Morgon € 18-22 & other crus from the 10 villages €16-21. Beaujolais villages €14 (9.50 a half bottle)
Still whites €13 to 29.50 a bottle. Reds (Cotes du Rhone) €19 to 35. Champagne Moet& Chandon €59 ; less expensive €46; Crement Bourgogne €21.
Our wine selection was a Morgon Cru - Domaine Grallon Lothilerie 2005 Vieilles Vignes for € 22. Most enjoyable.
Ambiance of the restaurant was excellent with good table spacing and plenty of other patrons obviously enjoying their meals. Service was efficient and friendly. Linen and table-ware very good. Glass ware - a cut above the average.
Favorite Dish: The mis en Bouche was crab and tomato mini stack.
We chose from the 21 euro Terrois Menu and Madam had Soupe a l'Onion with pasta; Souffles de Carpe & Coulis d'Ecrivises (prawns) served w 4 vegs ; Fromage (choice of eight from trolley).
He had Saucisson Brioche; Supreme de Poulet Fermier au Beaujolais; Fromage. We could have chosen dessert but, as usual, we elected not to do so preferring cheese with the last of the bottle of wine.
We spent 64 euro : about one hundred Australian dollars and concluded that, all in all, compared to a Brisbane restaurant of the same style and standard, it was a real bargain.
