G.H. Mumm & Cie, Reims: Shopping for champagne

by hopang

M/s G. H. Mumm % Cie is one of the largest producers of champagne in the world. It was founded by Mumm brothers in 1827. Today it is also a tourist attraction not only for the local tourists but also for foreign tourists. You may purchase the popular champagne known as Cordon Rouge produced in the factory at the boutique in the factory at slightly cheaper prices than those in the outlets at supermarkets. You may also follow a guided tour of the winery and see how the champagne is being manufactured in the factory. You will certainly enjoy champagne tasting of some popular champagne at the end of the tour. There is also an audio-visual display for visitors on the history of Mumm before the guided tour. Opening hours are between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. daily during the summer months. The factory is closed for visitors during the lunch hours. Mumm champagne. Prices slightly cheaper than...

Cours Saleya, Nice: Flowers Market

by hopang

Cours Saleya is located in the heart of Nice very close to the Promenade de Anglais and the Old Town. This is basically a colourful flowers market dealing in fresh flowers. It opens from early in the morning until approximately 1.00 p.m. daily. Cours Saleya is also a favourite meeting place for the locals. It is one of the major tourist attractions in Nice. Fresh fruits and vegetables and meat such as fish and chickens are also available in the market occasionally. However souvenirs can be purchased at reasonable price at Cours Saleya compared to those of other parts of the city. Don't forget to bring along your cameras with you when you visit Cours Saleya! Fresh flowers, souvenirs from Nice in particular and France in general. Reasonably cheap compared to other parts of the city.

C&A: La defense Shopping

by djpublicenemy

In "La defense", after being amazed by the modern Arch triumph , you can go in the mall beside it, there is a HUGE C&A , H&M , CIELO , and other shops that sell reasonably priced clothes, and the variety is amazing as well as the quality , specially if you are there in discount season ... these shops are also located in other parts of paris, like the opera street, but its all in one place in La defense.

Fromageries: Get some Cheese for your Picnic

by DanielF

Fromageries are an essential aspect of life in French cities and towns (actually all around the French-speaking world); and one of the most pleasant ones in my opinion as a cheese-lover. They are all over the place, in quaint stores or in simple market stalls. Do take advantage of them as, after all, a quintessential French travelling experience is to have a picnic of cheese and red wine in a luscious garden overlooking a chateau. The use of different kinds of milk from different breeds of cows, goats and sheep, as well as the different lengths of aging (affinage) result in over 500 cheese varieties produced in France; a really large choice in textures and flavours that can sometimes be confusing. The rule of thumb is obviously to try the local variety, particularly if it benefits from an AOC - Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (Designation of Controlled Origin) label. Even if most of...

Lafeyette Shopping towards Opera House

by bnward5

to me...it was a waste of timeeeeeeeeeee! If u've ever been to Herod's in London...this mall was shamefully unsightful!!!! I'm not one to put my nose up....but honestly,,,when u think of Parisian shopping...u think of high scale and ultra modern....at least i do....and this Lafeyette Sqr by the Opera House was a waste of time. Enjoy the smaller shops that surrounds that entire area...its much more enjoyable.

Boutiques en Calais

by Elodie_Caroline

On my first trip to Calais in 1983, I didn't think much of the hypermarket, too many greedy people from the UK looking for cheap drink and fags, but I did enjoy the little shops joined onto it.In one of the little boutiques, I found these really sweet little brass keyrings. They were of Buddha, and they are only about an inch high. I bought myself and my ex-boyfriend, Pete, one each, they weren't even very expensive either, considering that they were there purely for the 'tourists'.I still have mine and it goes absolutely everywhere with me. I always feel that I'll be safe as long as I have my little brass Buddha in my handbag and yet I've never believed in lucky charms as such, but it's always seemed to work for me. I also got a gorgeous gold coloured belt in '88, and just recently, my best friend Domi, who lives in Paris, sent me these pretty little ornate earrings from a boutique...

Buying Champagne at Reims

by spacedust

Hi,We were in Reims (pronounced by the French like 'rance') a week ago and happened to visit the Cellars at Veuve Clicquot. We bought a couple of bottles of vintage Veuve Clicquot (Brut, 1988 & 2002). This cost us about 40Euros each. The cost of the 2002 bottle was slightly higher at about 42 to 43Euros at other shops in Reims. But when we reached Paris, this had gone up to about 52Euros in the Alcool Shops there. Also, in the duty free shop at Nice, these bottles cost about 42Euros. It makes sense to buy the champagne at the cellars itself. By the way, you need to book via email/fax for a cellar visit and it costs 7.50Euros per person for the trip. More details at --- www.veuve-clicquot.comFor those who cannot make it to the cellars, you can buy the same at couple of wine-shops bang opposite the main entrance to the Notre Dame there (on either side of the road leading up to the...

Laguiole Knives: Laguiole Knives

by ATLC

The ultimate knife from France is the Laguiole knife (pronounced Lay-Yool).Handmade with a choice of handles in colourful synthetic or exotic woods or beautiful bone. For 15 years I have drooled in front of every shop that sells these knives. I own a good Swiss army knife and had no reason to trade it for a Laguiole knife. But I'm sure that some day I will. Now I bought a set of steak knives, with rosewood after long discussion with the lady in the shop about which knives to buy.The detail of these knives is exquisite. Not only the quality of the steel but also the rosewood handles with tiny copper nails as decoration. It is truly an investment for a beautiful heirloom. After I decided her husband sharpened the knives once and they were put in a wooden box. Then painstakingly wrote out a receipt. The brand Laguiole comes from the village Laguiole that unfortunately did not succeed in...

Fromageries otherwise supermarkets: Cheese

by chess_machine

If your country allows it, you should come back home with some French cheese. Being a former expatriate during one year, I remember us French feeling nostalgic to the used smell (yes!) of Camembert or the magic taste of Roquefort. And though you can find some of them in huge cosmopolitan cities like New York, it might be harder elsewhere. Best is to go to a fromagerie, a cheese store. There are some in main French cities. I personnaly love: Camembert, Roquefort, Conte and Reblochon.
