Place Vendome: Jewels

by chess_machine

If you want to offer your wife a 10 000e jewel (or more obviously...), Place Vendome, Paris, is the place to go. Most famous place for jewelry in France I reckon, and one of the most famous in the world. The place is beautiful, hosting the Ritz hotel and stores like Van Cleef and Arpels, Jaeger le Coutre and Boucheron. Expect to pay the most. Jewels, watches and other luxury. Unaffordable prices

?: Wine

by chess_machine

To French, wine is extremely important. I reckon most French get their initiation to the art of drinking wine quite early. I personaly started drinking wine around 15 during 3 hours family sunday lunches. It is often so important that sometimes we forget other countries can actually produce wine as good as in France...Anyway, lets go to the main point, which is what kind of wine to buy.We have to divide wines in 3 categories: red, white and rosé;Most famous red wines are Bordeaux and Bourgogne. So many differences between the two kind of wines. I think, but am not a specialist, that Bourgogne is generally stronger than Bordeaux. Anyway, if you want to try French red wine, you have to try both. Other famous red wines are: Chateauneuf du Pape (quite expansive), Cotes du Rhone, Saumur, Beaujolais and many others.Best white wines come from Bordeaux, Alsace and Bourgogne. Include Chardonnay...

Chanel 5: The mother of all perfumes

by ATLC

These days I'm not so enchanted with the modern perfumes. Too girlish often. But Chanel 5, a favourite of mine from years ago, is something of a highlight of French culture. Well, it's probably cheaper in France than in your country! But still a luxury.

Furterer: Hair care

by ATLC

Since about 6 years I've been using this brand of cosmetics for my hair. The shampoos and other haircare products are absolutely superior. It's a French product line and although you can buy it in The Netherlands (though few and far between) it is cheaper in France. For hair loss there's a very good programme with massages and oils. Definitely get some of your hair back. Not cheap but still... A shampoo will set you back between 8,90 and 9,90 euro.

Buy this special treat at the cellars of the famed Chartreuse label, in the town, Voiron. the cellar is not located at the monastery in the hills. This is the Ultimate!! The Elixir of Life.Well that's the legend, in fact it's an alcohol vegetable liqueur. The legend says put a few drops on a sugar cube and suck it when you have a sore throat or cold. Beware, this stuff is 71% alcohol!!

Cherbourg and beyond: A booze cruise

by LouiseTopp

Lifestyle’s which is a disabled group went to Cherbourg by way of Portsmouth one weekend. We met up at 5.30 and caught the P&O ship which sailed at 8pm. We had to wait in the terminal for a while, there was quite a bit of crowding & they actually wanted to see your passports before allowing boarding. Getting on board was quite interesting, there’s a long flight of stairs going up to Deck seven; there’s eight decks in all. On deck seven there’s the reception, shop, hairdressers, Crèche, & Foreign Money bureau. There’s also a small restaurant on this deck, serving breakfast & a range of cakes & pastries. The duty free shop opens at 9am & closes at 10.pm, they allow Euros or Stirling. It sells perfume & the testers, rather useful if you have forgotten any on the way to the party in the lounge upstairs (har har!) There’s also chocolate? & booze on offer, it’s quite a racket when all the...
