Le Tour - more cycling than is good for you!!

by aaaarrgh

The famous Tour de France cycling race takes place each July throughout France ...and Belgium ...and England in 2007!! Around 200 international bike riders cycle over 2000 kms including several days in the high mountains of the Alps and Pyrennees. The competitors are some of the fittest people around with massive hearts, thighs and a supreme ability to block out the pain of two weeks continual riding. There are many hundreds of thousand of spectators that line the route to watch the riders pass by. However, a 20 second rattle of pedals and the main pelaton (bunch of riders) passes very swiftly. Fortunately there is a big build up to the event - the sponsors throw FREE hats, drinks, sweets etc into the crowd. Each team has a fleet of vehicules, often disguised as water bottles, squirrels and other team mascots. The riders are followed by their support vehicules with spare bicycles and...

Skiing, snowboarding

Best location to ski is the Alps. Alps are probably the best place in Europe to go skiing. I have been once to Austria and they also have amazing skiing conditions. In the French Alps, you will find many famous spots, such as Meribel, Chamonix or Tignes, as well as the rich spot of Meg?ve. High diversity of slopes, good nightlife and beautiful landscapes.Second best place to go skiing is the Pyrenneas. The altitude is lower and the skiing condition are less good than in the Alps. Though, places are less crowded and cheaper. The landscape is said to be really beautiful.Other spots where you can go skiing (but don't expect to find amazing conditions there...) are Jura, les Vosges and Massif Central.

France national sport is obviously football (soccer for US people). Since we won the world cup in 1998 we sometimes believe we are still the world champion, even if it is not... Anyway, French premier league is one of the best in Europe (Italian, Spanish and English are better though), and we have great players in France. Among them Thierry Henry, Trezeguet, Zidane, Lizarazu, Makelele... If you are fond of sport, going to see a championship game might be a fun experience.Second national sport is rugby. Still, it is the most popular sport in South West of France, where you will find nearly half teams who play in the Top 14 league. This sport is becoming more and more popular and many people tend to actually find this sport much more interesting than football (main reason being that they dont want to be part of the mass popularity of football). Once again, watching a 6 nations game is a...

Graham Baxter Sporting Tours

by Hopkid

We signed on with Sporting Tours for our TdF holiday in 2004. We chose the week-long Quality level tour that followed the Tour during the Alpine stages and up to the finish in Paris. We were pleased with the organization, the lodging faclities, guidance on daily rides, the coach (especially our driver), and the strategic arrangements to get us each day to where we could view the stage. There was one minor blow-up among those who did not bring bikes when on the day of Stage 17, the non-riders were dropped off in Tailloires and were told that they would not be able to view the stage unless they were willing to walk 10-15 km. That did not go over well. However after talking to some folks in the town, it turned out that the race route was going right past the north side of the town and they only had to walk a couple of kilometers. Our guide and driver were great at getting us as close to the...

mountaineering

by Maximilian21

Mountaineering is a somewhat popular past time particularly in the Alps. Each year thousands come to take the Mont Blanc and other peaks. Unfortunetly each year for some, the very sport they love takes there lives. There probabaly not a year that goes by that climber arnt killed from avalanche or falling from the mountain. I can tell you from experience thats its an evigorating but also nerve racking past time. There is often the occasion when you on a mountain and you stop and ask yourself why your doing this. You say that this is the very last time. Unfortunetely when you get down, immediately you think of another mountain to climb. Its probabaly the sence of satisfaction you get to say you have climbed the thing. The funny thing is that when your at the top you dont often feel this, you just want to get down.

Alpine Skiing

by aliante1981

France has some of the best Alpine Skiing trails in the world. Just count the number of World Cup events taking place here each year!!! Things to bring with you:- Ski clothing - a must, since you'll hardly want to rent that;- Skis and poles - you can bring the ones you're used to with you;- Sunglasses - mandatory, or you'll be having eyesight problems for some time afterwards (sun + snow is not the best combination);- Helmet - not compulsory, but statistics say you're 50% less likely to suffer head injuries. You don't want them, right???Note: if you are travelling from afar, you might skip taking your own skis and rent everything out on your arrival.P.S.: Or, and if you're a beginner, bring plenty of courage with you:)))

Snowboarding in the Alps

by elanis

Although the Alps can get really busy at peak season and people queueing for the lifts look more like ants, a good powder day at the top of Les Chosalets can't be beaten! Avoid the second week in February as its always packed out with school trips, and for some reason March is strangely expensive. January is good as its nice and cold, affordable, and relatively quiet.

Paragliding

by Arm-Chair-Hero

We had no idea just how this was going to be...we knew the priciples and that was about it. Our first attempt was called off due to a storm. This passed and an hour later it was safe to try again. We began climbing the mountain in a mini bus out of a comedy film. We climbed....we climbed and we climbed...at this point all of us had gone quiet wondering just how high we was going...we climbed...we climbed...we climbed...this point we was all wanting the toilet. The instructor said we was 6 500-7 000 feet high. The village below was toy town. Adrenalin kicks in a the fear of looking soft and we made our jumps....I was first and unfortunately crashed after 15 seconds in the air....batterd and bruised but not put off second attempt was made succesfully.....you got to try this the feeling is out of this world you loose the sensation of height because below just doesnt look real. All over...

White water rafting

by Arm-Chair-Hero

We had a day off whilst in France and had a choice of activities...we chose white water rafting and paragliding. The price for rafting was very reasonable I dont remember how much but I know it wasnt expensive. The instructors was very friendly and proffesional. The raft lasted for around 22 miles and had some pretty good bits where you was hanging on till your knuckles went white. Wet suits are provided but trainers are are a neccesity...old ones are best so you can just put in the bin when finished.
