by keeweechic Notre Dame des Doms started out as a monument of Roman Provencal art and after many transformations and renovations, it has become an imposing and richly ornate building. The statue of the Virgin is 6 metre high and weighs 4 and a half tons. She seems to watch tranquilly over the Avignonais. Leave a Comment Address: Avignon, France

by keeweechic The Gallery of Mirrors is 246 feet long and 33 feet wide and is decorated with paintings by Le Brun celebrating French victories. Seventeen large windows look out onto the park and there is a corresponding number of mirrors on the opposite wall which ensure that the whole gallery is flooded with light. . by keeweechic The Louvre was built in 1200 as a fortress. It was rebuilt in the mid-16th century for use as a royal palace and became the residence of the King. The Louvre began as a royal museum accessible to the public in 1793, when the doors of the Grande Galerie were opened to visitors. The palace was devoted entirely as a museum in 1988 and a glass pyramid was added to the palace courtyard. Today the Louvre Museum is the world's largest museum. Carnac by margaretvn carnac was on my list of things i had to see since I first heard the name because I think it has such a magical sound to it. If you have seen my page on the U.K. you will know that Standing Stones and prehistorical sites fascinate us and we have visited several sites. Carnac has to be one of the world's grat prehistoric sites with its almost 3,00 menhirs in parallel rows. Menhirs are the most common of the megaliths. They are standing stones either alone or in lines. If they are arranged in a circle they are known as cromlechsand two upright stones with a third forming a roof is called a Dolmen. I have seen a lovely one in Ireland. The stones at Carnac date back to about 4,000 BC and their original use is uncertain but thought to be religious. There is also the idea that , because of their precise lines, they could be an early astronomical calendar. Leave a Comment

Point du Raz by margaretvn The Point du raz is a narrow headland which juts into the Altantic at the tip of cap Sizun. It offers fantastic views of jagged rocks and pounding seas and wonderful chances of photos of marvellous light fall on the sea BUT on a windy day it can be very cold -so take a jacket. http://www.leicestercounciloffaiths.org.uk/Images/ by Perucha Since it's a border between France and Germany, the architecture is mixed. Strasbourg has the most beautiful Cathederal I've ever seen, especially when sun picks out every detail of the stonework with bright blue sky as a background. From here you can go to Alsace.
