If you see any road show in there and if somebody from the entertainment group is looking for somebody as a voluntere....Choose one, join that group or just stay in there and watch.....Either joining or watching, same fun!!!! Italian and French-style gardens ~ you have to take a guided tour (this was the only negative, it would be so nice to wander here). The gardens are very manicured and intensely green. There are also a few lovely buildings hidden among the paths. It's certainly worth dropping by for a tour of the grounds ~ especially on a sunny day. There are additional photos and history in my travelogue. Leave a Comment Directions: North-East of Sarlat

Everything in the Chateau is new ~ it was gutted by a fire in the 60's ~ but it still makes for a lovely visit. It's a guided tour, but you can wander the gardens at leisure (and they are worth the time). Drew Barrymore's Ever After was filmed in parts of Hautefort ~ the re-creation of the interior is expertly achieved. Down the hill from the Chateau is a building whose architectural style matches ~ you can't miss it ~ it houses a somewhat creepy Museum of Medicine. The Museum isn't expensive at all and it provides something *entirely* different to pass an hour. Take a look at my travelogue for more photographs of the Chateau and its gardens. Leave a Comment

The Museum of Tobacco is very interesting ~ but signage is only in French. I think it would still hold interest, even without understanding the descriptions, as the art (posters, paintings, cigar holders, snuff boxes, etc.) is so fascinating. The museum has three floors and we were actually so interest in all the exhibits, that we left for lunch and then came back for more afterwards. Leave a Comment

You can't miss visitting Alsace... The little quaint villages will charm you witih its cobblestone, colorful houses, lovely shopping, wine tasting and gastronomy. There are a few castles to visit, and vineyards all around. The town shown on hte picture is Ribeauville. From town you can walk up the hills to view some castles... Leave a Comment Directions: Alsace is located in the eastern part of France, by the German border. Strasbourg is the main city and head south.

Thanks to Victor Hugo's great novel "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", the Cathedral of Notre Dame is probably the most famous Cathedral in all of France, if not the world. Hence this is one of the most photographed buildings in the world. That said you should expect crowds while visiting Notre Dame Cathedral. Please do not let that stop you from visiting for it is a stunning building with beautiful stained glass, interesting medieval carvings including the famous gargoyles and stunning alabaster stonework. Notre Dame Cathedral was built between 1160 and 1345. Interesting enough apparently the famous gargolyes were added only in the 19th century during restoration work after the French Revolution. There are more pictures of Notre Dame Cathedral and it's gargolyes in a travelogue section Leave a Comment Directions: Ile de la Cite. It sits so prominently on the island that it is hard to miss.

I have visited Paris twice over the years. For some reason that I cannot explain the first time that I visited Paris I decided not to climb up to the towers that are home to the world's most famous gargoyles. This is inspite of excellent weather. Anyway during my second visit to Notre Dame twelve years later, I decided to make the climb. This time the weather was rather uncomfortable with a cold wind and overcast skies. At least it did not rain. Regardless of the weather, if you are healthy enough to climb up a couple of hundred feet, then you should make the climb. The gargoyles are very interesting and the views of Paris are excellent. Because Paris is a somewhat flat city with few skyscrapers, you can see for miles without obstruction. The stairs up are in the northeast tower and it costs about $4.88 Euros to climb them.
