Dinan

by Pieter11

This Medieval town in central Bretagne is a great example of old Breton towns. The centre is built inside citywalls, and is spectacularly situated at 75 metres above the river that floats through the town, la Rance. Inside the walls you will see countless beautiful old buildings. Some built will the typical Breton granite rocks, but most of them built with in the even older style: with wood. Especially those wooden houses are very old. Some of them were already built in the 15th century. The central clock tower, the famous Tour de l'Horloge is also built in this period and contains a very famous clockwork inside its wooden tower. There also is an old fortress at the outside of the centre, that now is used as a museum, and behind the cathedral there is a nice park that offers you a stunning view of the environment, the river and the town's harbour. At this side there also is a high...

Romance and/or wine in the Country

by DSwede

If you wish to enjoy the company of a friend or spouse, then try some wine and culinary delights while you're at it, take a barge cruise. There are multiple companies that cater to most foreigners (ie. languages). The boats will move in one direction for a week, and you will disembark. Then they will turn around and run the opposite direction with new guests for a week. There are many companies to choose from, as well as rivers/canals that are navigated. The barge moves slow enough that you can get off at one lock, walk along the toe path and beat it to the next lock and simply step back on as it goes by. Along the way, the boat will either guide you on excursions or let you have some time to do your own in nearby cities (check out some of my entries to Auxerre, Tonnerre, Chablis, Tanlay, etc).

Fresh flowers at Chenonceau

Mont Saint Michel -The best omelettes and crepes

by 807Wheaton

This rocky granite islet rises to 80 meters and is linked to the Bay by an unfloodable causeway built in 1879. Bishop of Avranches in the year 708, St. Aubert had three dreams in which the archangel, Michael prodded his head with his 4th finger, and St. Aubert felt the pain in his head. He decided to build a chapel and dedicated it to St. Michel. Thus began a series of construction on this site. Sacked during the French Revolution the abbey was turned over to the Historic Monuments department in 1874, and is now open to the public all year round. Mont Saint-Michel is famous for its hotels and restaurants, with the traditional omelettes, crepes and butter cookies. Many years ago we saw a Rick Steves program of Brittany where chefs were beating eggs in copper pots to make omelettes. We ate omelettes and crepes at one of the restaurants located high up the climb into the street. Both were...

DeNimes - the Roman Town

by 807Wheaton

When we arrived in Nimes there was a Fall Festival going on. Most of the streets had food vendors in front of the restaurants and shops. There were bands playing here and there and a style show was being presented on the steps of this lovely square house that you can see in this picture. Nimes had been flooded the week before we were there and we saw a little water here and there but no major damage. The Roman arena in Nimes is very well preserved as you can see from the pictures. We were told that the city of Nimes developed a blue serge material that was exported through Genoa, Italy. The word "denimes" was stamped on the boxes that held the serge material and it went to Genoa. Eventually all of these words were changed to mean "denim jeans". That's what we were told and just for fun I included a web page below about the history of denim.Nimes also has a beautiful Garden area with...

Normandy - Mont St. Michel

by ant1606

First chuch was built on this rock around AD 1000, and through further development this abbey stands today as a magnificent building. Main street that leads up the abbey is packed with houses now hosting stores and restaurants. The location can be visited all-year round, linked by a road that is safe and never covered by the tide except on the occasion of the "Grand Maree" (Great Tide). Check tide timetable.

Mont Ventoux

by Pieter11

The mountain Mont Ventoux is famous. Famous for a lot of reasons:- First of all the Mont Ventoux is situated wonderfully in the Provence area. It´s a huge mountain between the hills that surround it. It´s 1912 metres high, it looks like a moon landscape on the top, and on the way up you cross the most beautiful nature.- Secondly, the Mont Ventoux has become famous because of the Tour de France. The cyclists climb this mountain almost every year and every year this is a real spectacle to see. - And finally, what made this mountain legendary, was the death of cyclist Tommy Simpson, during the Tour of 1967. This year he collapsed in his way to the top and died in the moon landscape of the Mont Ventoux. Still you can see his memorial stone, at 1,5 km´s under the top.For more information, check out my Malaucene-page.
