The Cote d'Albatre

by margaretvn

The Cote d'Albatre or Alabaster coast is so called because of the chalky high cliffs which form the Normandy coast from Le Havre to Le Triport. It is famous for the eroded arch of Falaise d'val west of Etratat. Guy de Maupassant said that these cliffs were like an elephant dipping its trunk in to the water. We wanted to visit the high granite coast around Etretat and do some walking. Take some good walking boots or shoes there are some good walks along the coast.

Giverny

by margaretvn

Giverny is a little village that would be unimportant if the Impressionist Claude Monet had not lived there. The house is lovely; the painter lived in it from 1883 until his death in 1926. Claude Monet is buried in the church cemetery in Giverny. The house where Monet lived, known as the Fondation Claude Monet, is open to the public. It is decorated in the original colour schemes loved by the painter. The gardens are the highlight of the visit in Giverny and in the hot weather we had, they were a welcome relief. They were laid out by Monet and include a lily pond complete with Japanese wooden bridge. The Lily pond is often central in his paintings.By the house is a very good gift shop with good quality goods.

Bayeaux

by margaretvn

Bayeux was the first town to be liberated by the Allied Forces in 1944. it was also lucky enough to escape damage in the war. Today it has a lovely old centre with 15th - 19th century buildings located around the main streets - rue St Martin and rue St jean. There is a beautiful Gothic cathedral. originally a Romanesque church stood on the spot. The cathedral was consecrated in 1077. It is thought that Bishop Odo (one of the tapestry's figures) commissioned the Bayeux tapestry for that occasion.Go and see the beautiful Bayeux Tapestry - in handwork it justifies William the Conqueror's invasion of England. It is 230 feet long and it was probably commissioned by Bishop Odo of Bayeux. It shows the Battle of hastings with King Harolds defeat - including Harold getting an arrow in his eye! you can recognise the English by their moustashes and the french because they are clean-shaven.The audio...

The Mont Saint Michel.

by margaretvn

The M.S.M. on a mountain in the sea has an unworldly appearance. According to legends in the year 708 the Archangel Michael ordered the bishop of Avranches to build a cathedral on the granite rock. 200 years later the Norman dukes had a cloister built on the spot. How the site looked changed often as buildings were added and changed. The whole mountain is covered now with towers and arches and ports making it look like something Disney designed! During the 100 years war the cloister was strengthened but this did not destroy the fairytale like appearance of the place.

the old centre of Rouen

by margaretvn

Visit Rouen and the old centre. Rouen is a lovely city situated at the lowest point the river Seine could be bridged. It was severely damaged in WW II but is being restored well. There are lots of lovely historic buildings within walking distance of the city's marvellous Notre Dame cathedral. The city has a rich history - it has been a Celtic trading post, a Roman garrison and a Viking colony. In 911 it was the capital of the Norman Dutchy. In 1419 it was a captured by Henry V after a siege in the Hundred Years war. Perhaps most people remember it as where, in 1431, Joan of Arc was burned at the stake on Place du Vieux-Marche. Jean of Arc was burnt at the stake on the 30th of May 1431.

the Cathedral in Rouen.

by margaretvn

This is a Gothic cathedral whose marvellous west facade was painted almost 30 times by Claude Monet. He studied the effect the changing light had on the contours of the facade. The west facade is framed by two unequal towers. The central lantern tower is Neo-Gothic and made from cast iron and it dates from 1876. The Notre Dame cathedral is beautiful and is still being restored today after damage suffered during the war. The impressionist Claude Monet often painted this cathedral. Henry the Second of England is buried in the cathedral and also the heart of Richard the Lionheart. He was King of England and Duke of Normandy - a none English speaking King of England

Coolest Museum by far

by CDNgirl

The Oceanographic Museum in Monacco was soooo amazing!! It sits on a cliff overlooking the ocean and has a great view from the rooftop and from the gardens surrounding the museum. The museum itself has three floors of exhibits with the aquarium on the bottom floor(tres bien!!) It was a pleasant and welcome change of pace from the rough life we had soaking up the riviera sun day after day!!! Its the largest and most interesting museum of this nature I've ever seen. The building is beautiful and the exhibits of first quality. Jacques Cousteau was the director before he died a few years ago.

Arles

by Pieter11

The small city of Arles is very famous because of one man: Vincent van Gogh. If you know his paintings from that period it's clear that he got very influences by the beautiful environment of the city. The houses are built in a typical "Provence" style, the trees are grey, skinny and always have big, green leaves and the field around Arles show a lot of sunflowers. All these things are shown on his paintings too. Everywhere in Arles you'll see Van Gogh's paintings on postcards, flags, posters and on painted copies. If you are here you should really take a look and see the similarities between his art and the environment.Besides the Van Gogh story you can also see a lot of Roman remainings in Arles. The city has the old remainings of what once was a Roman theatre, built in the period of Emperor Augustus. But in the centre of the city you cannot miss the great Arena. This building that is...

Avignon

by Pieter11

Most people only know the city of Avignon from the children's song "Sur le pont d'Avignon". This bridge of Avignon is a very extraordinairy attraction in the city, but there is so much more to see...The most beautiful building in the city definitely is the palace of the popes, Palais des Papes. For a very long time Avignon has been a religious centre. In this time the enormous palace was built. It opened officially in 1335. The palace can be separated into two parts. The oldest part that was built under Benedictus XII, which looks sober and strict, just like the modest role of the popes in those days. The newer part is very different: during the regime of Clemens VI a part was built with lots of decorations, paintings, sculptures and towers. Today the palace has the enormous surface of 15.000 square metres, and is partly opened for public. If you visit the palace you have free entrance...

Orléans

by Pieter11

The city of Orléans, in the very centre of France, is not really a touristical destination. The city has more heavy industry than fine attractions. Nevertheless it is a city with a big history, mostly based on one person: Jeanne d'Arc.In the year 1428, the English army attacked France. It conquered the north of the country easily, but it got difficulties when it reached Orléans. Here the inhabitants fought back, and the Englishmen struggled here for weeks. At that time, Jeanne d'Arc was only 18 years old. She received a message of God, who told her that she was the one who could save France from its enemies. Jeanne d'Arc has big problems to make the French army believe that she was the one they had to trust, but in the end she got the power. She beated the English army in Orleans and after that she repeated that several times, until the Englishmen were completely defeated. In 1431...
