Notre Dame

by Goner

Notre Dame was the first place I wanted to see in Paris, why? It must be the most recognized church in the world, I had seen it on postcards, calendars, in news; read about it in history books and in novels and I wanted to see it in person. Of course I didn’t look for Quzimoto ringing the bell, but the stairway to the bell tower makes for an interesting climb, especially if you must squeeze by someone going in the other direction. The view of Paris is phenomenal from its top. From there you can see the architectural details up close, pretty amazing. The westside with the rose window, looks so formidable, but the flying buttresses softens its look while they are actually strengthening the structure.Note the rainbow in the picture - didn't see that when I took the picture.

Marseilles, hot as Hell

by LouiseTopp

I got the Euro Star from London Waterloo at 8am in the morning. Being London, the weather was warm as it usually is for the UK, but I then had no idea what I was in for! If you have never done the channel tunnel before, it can be a bit daunting. There’s lots of tickets in a blue book to look after. There’s the usual check up's where you have to take all your bags off to be checked, then there are all the escalators & finding the right platform. The guards (if you can find them) usually try to help. On the train itself, which has slide doors, & a bathroom at each end; there’s air conditioning. It's comfy, with little metal tables, which you can pull down to lean upon. Ears tend to pop a as you go through the tunnel itself, you go down quite deep under the English Channel I expect. They usually tell you before they are about to go through, which is also said in French. It’s amazing that...

Marseilles harbour

by LouiseTopp

It’s Vast & easy to get lost. There’s many outside restaurants, & a man in a swelteringly hot bird suit who's beak opens & snaps shut with a snapping sound all day long; (reminds me off my sister har har!, sorry;) They have cameras everywhere, & there's a little train which comes to the harbour from the Basilica of Notra Dame de la Garde.

TOULOUSE

by Lady_Mystique

The capital of the Midi-Pyrénées region and préfecture (capital) of the Haute-Garonne department --- TOULOUSE is the southwest's largest city.It is renowned for its high-tech industries, including some of Europe's most advanced aerospace facilities.Since the anti-Cathar movement of the 13th C., this has also been a major centre of higher education, with a student population only second in size to Paris. There are also many Spanish descendents living here -- of refugees from the Spanish Civil War. Along with a large North African community, this makes for a lively, friendly, and go-getting city with an abundance of "bodegas" (Spanish style wine bars), North African restaurants, and laid-back cafés. Nationwide magazine polls identify Toulouse as most French people's favourite city. With no quarries nearby, all the older buildings in the centre were made of red brick. This has created a...

Cevennes

by iguana23

I'd like to buy a house here one day, it is such a beautiful region. Can be a bit isolated without a car though. The main 'sight' to see is a natural phenomenon called the 'Cirque de Navacelles'. This is a small village (Navacelle) on a calcium based (calcaire? not sure on the translation of that) rocky outcrop at the bottom of a gorge. It was at one time encircled by a river which has since dried up, leaving this incredible natural phenomenon.

VERDUN-sur-Meuse

by mtncorg

There have been forts in Verdun since the Gauls. Here, the Treaty of Verdun, in 843, saw Charlemagne dividing his empire among his grandsons. The city was an important medieval center for art and boasts a 1000 year old cathedral. Ramparts and gateways remain from the ancient core. A new citadelle designed by the military engineer, Vauban, is here for your exploring pleasures, attesting to the fact that Verdun, occupying an important location along the Meuse River and the northeast frontier of France, was one of the largest fortified areas in France. Of course, Verdun's main fame comes from one of the most epic battles of WWI that was fought here from 21 Feb 1916 to 11 Dec. In a battlefield of only six square miles, 700000 casualties - over 250000 killed outright. Monuments, ruined trenches, forts, cemeteries dot the battlefields lying a few miles northeast and northwest of the town. Pick...

THE FAMOUS LASCAUX-CAVES....

by eden_teuling

The MASSIF CENTRAL has plenty of wonderful limestone formations but the CAVES OF LASCAUX are just SUPERB and famous because of the paintings of animals...All these treasures are probably 17.000 - 20.000 years old and created by Cro-Magnon Man, imagine that, it gives me goose-pimples and I can assure you that visiting these caves will make you feel the same!! The most splendid & interesting caves are in the region DORDOGNE near the towns of Les Eyzier and Montignac in the valley of the Vézère and near the Cabrerets near the Lot!The most excellent MUSEUMS are in Les Eyzies, Périgieux, Sarlat and le Thot: but.....it is wise to book in advance..........It is so overwhelming and......don't envy me.......I was one of the lucky ones who visited the REAL CAVES.....Tourists came in droves to LASCAUX after the 2nd World War ..........and that was tuining the paintings! After some 20 years a layer...

Chartres Cathedral

by windsorgirl

The giant Chartres Cathedral was first built in the 12th century and rebuilt after a devastating fire in the 13th century. It is filled with magnificent stained glass windows. Probably why the city of Chartres is known as the stained glass capital of the world. The cathedral also houses a cloak that is said to have been worn by the Virgin Mary. The cloak miraculously survived the fire which destroyed the cathedral in the 13th century. Be sure to catch a tour of the cathedral if you can.
