The Arc de Triomphe

by Paul2001

The Arc de Triomphe is a really great big version of an old Roman arch of triumph. It stands 49m high and is 44m wide. It sits in a huge traffic circle at a point where no less than twelve city streets come together. You really should approach the arch via a underpass if you wish to get up close and go to the top of structure.Construction of the Arch was begun in 1806 at the height of Napoleon's military career. However the Arch was not completed until 1836. The Arch as been the scene of many historic photo ops such as when the German Army march by the Arch in 1940 after its conquest of France. Later in the same war American troops marched by the Arch in triumph after they helped force the Germans out of France in 1944.The Arch is adorned with many sculptured reliefs depicting important scenes in French military history. The names you see on the walls of the Arch are those of French...

Visit the National Museum of Medieval Art

by Paul2001

This great museum is in an expanded complex that includes a medieval abbey(L' Hotel de Cluny) and ancient Roman bath from the 4th century. For some reason it does not rate highly on most tourists' itinerary inspite of the fact that it has quite possibly the greatest collection of medieval art in the world.

Visit the Louvre

by Paul2001

Some people I know have managed to visit Paris without visiting the Louvre and I do not know how they do it. I think that it is the single most important site in Paris and naturally one of the most important art museums in the world.I think most people are just intimidated by it, so they choose not to go. The Louvre collection is large but it should not frighten you off. I think it is best to attempt to see a portion at a time as the Lourvre on a whole is to vast for just one visit. Each school of art is clearly seperated as you will notice by the gallery map that you can pick up at the entrance. Go to the galleries whose works on display will most interest you. If you really have little understanding of art then take a tour. The last time I visited the Louvre I was dumbfounded by the number of people wondering around from gallery to gallery not appreciating the various collections. A...

Notre-Dame Cathedral

by traveldave

One of the most recognizable landmarks in Paris is Notre-Dame Cathedral. It is the most popular tourist attraction in Paris, drawing more visitors than even the Eiffel Tower. It has been said that "it is not the highest, largest, or richest church, but, there is none more perfect."Notre-Dame Cathedral is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture. Notable architectural features include the twin bell towers that rise to a height of 228 feet (69 meters), and the flying buttresses, which are arched exterior supports. The flying buttresses were designed and built by Jean Ravy, and span 50 feet (15 meters). They were not part of the cathedral's original plan, but were added during construction after stress caused the rising walls to lean outward. Notre-Dame Cathedral is one of the first buildings in the world to use flying buttresses. The building itself is 430 feet (130 meters) long....

Château de Chambord

by traveldave

There are dozens of chateaux in the Loire River Valley. The largest and most impressive is Château de Chambord. This massive chateau is 510 feet (155 meters) long, 380 feet (116 meters) wide, contains 440 rooms and 365 fireplaces, and has 13 main staircases and 70 back stairs. Château de Chambord was constructed between 1518 and 1537 by King François I, who emptied the nation's treasury and resorted to looting church treasuries to pay for its construction. Ironically, after paying for his folly, he did not even have enough money to pay the ransom for his two sons, who were being held captive in Spain.

Bâteau-Mouches

by traveldave

A great way to see the riverside monuments of Paris is to take a river tour on a bâteau-mouche along the River Seine. A bâteau-mouche is a long, glass-enclosed sightseeing boat which plies the waters of the river. The trip is especially spectacular at night when the monuments are flood-lit.

The Basilica of Sacré-Cœur

by traveldave

The Basilica of Sacré-Cœur, or Sacred Heart, sits at the highest point in Paris in the Montmartre district. After France's defeat by Germany during the War of 1870, the National Assembly, under pressure from the powerful Roman Catholic lobby, decided to build the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur as a sign of hope. Construction on the basilica started in 1875, and was completed in 1919.A 19-ton (17,240-kilogram) bell, called the Savoyarde, was placed in the bell tower.
