The Louvre is one of the three greatest repositories of art in the world, along with the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg and the Prado in Madrid. It is the world's most visited museum, with more than 8,000,000 visitors per year. The museum's collection includes some of the most famous works of art in the world, including the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. There are more than 400,000 works of art in the Louvre's permanent collection, but only about 35,000 pieces are on display at any one time.
