High Prices

by mileslunn

In France, buying non-local food can be very expensive. A typical can of pop can cost up to 5 Euros in tourist areas, so avoid ordering American food and drinks in tourist areas. In fact Wine is cheaper than pop in France, so best to order that with your meal.

Strikes

by b1bob

Strikes grèves in France are quite common. In fact, they seem like France's national pastime. The right is guaranteed in the French constitution, with the public sector having the highest frequency of walking out. Every year in France has one public sector strike, usually lasting one day. It is not uncommon at the national or local level for teachers, doctors, and transport workers to strike for any given length. SNCF (National French train company) strikes are clearly the most disruptive, as France depends greatly on its rail system. One time, the truckers went on strike and they blocked the autoroute. So, our tour bus had to take detours down the backroads. That was inconvenient, but more scenic. The hotel ran out of lettuce due to the nationwide strike, so they put together a salad with tomatoes, onions, black olives, and some sort of vinaigrette. We nicknamed it trucker's strike...

BEWARE Strip clubs near Moulin Rouge.

by B3av

Strip clubs around the Moulin Rouge offering a drink and a lap dance for a few euros. If (like I was) you're trapped in Paris, bored out of your mind and it's late at night and you end up in one of these places do not buy champagne. It will be cheap and nasty and most probably over 100 euros a glass. Also the strippers are pretty awful. Sure there are plenty of sophisticated strip clubs in Paris, however not in the immediate vicinity of the Moulin Rouge.

High roller meals

by Davelyn

Our friends went into a Restuarant by the Airport in Paris, picked up the menu and started to order as if they were still in North America. Little to be known each item was seperately priced and at the end of the evening they ended paying about $100. for 2 orders of meal of Hamburger, Fries and Pop along with some icecream. They should have checked that the waiter first could understand english( which I'm sure they do), have him relate the order back to them and also the total price, which of course would be in French Francs. They then could have done the conversion & ordered if they were totally satisfied. Watch for the advertised Specials. Keep away from the high lights of the City.

Marseille, hold onto your bags!!!

by Fotuosamoa

Marseille, or most big cities are rife with opportunists who will grab an unattended bag, wallet, anything. And just becoz youre in your vehicle, doesn't make you safe. LOCK THE DOOR, we've seen tourists getting robbed ...the thieves just reach into vehicles and take the bags, that easy!anyhow, that advice was not to make you paranoid and cancel the trip. It's basically to make people aware that you can't leave things unattended. Some tourists (many im afraid) are so nonchalant about their belongings, leaving cameras lying around, bags hanging on arm chairs....just take that extra precaution and all will be sweeeet as.have a good trip!!!

Tipping

by ddijak

The bill states "service net". Since we were used to seeing "service compris" (meaning tip included) on bills, we assumed that service net meant that the tip was not included. Wrong! We asked the hotel and they said that the tip is included in "service net". We left way too much tip.

Get polishing

by Arm-Chair-Hero

If you do thiss type of holiday you have to accept that you lovely motor pride and joy just might get damaged, rolled over or at the very least scratched. We had a guy with over 50k`s worth of vehicle that accepted this but did have to decline from one or two of the tracks because of possibilty of damage. If you have side steps on they will definately hinder you....plus side is better to rip your side steps off than bend your sills :O) Take your time see what the terrain is in front of you and use some one to guide you.Might be an idea to invest in some sump guards. Dont buy a 60k Range RoverThe photo below hides some pretty big boulders that could have done some serious damage if not taken into consideration. As you are looking at the photo, to your left is a couple of hundred foot straight drop....gospel truth is alot of the times we decided to forget seat belts...they would have been...

Come Prepared

by Arm-Chair-Hero

Ok folks you know with this sort of adventure that many things can go wrong and preperation certainly lowers the odds of this happening. As you can see from the photo one of our group had a serious problem with over heating....we improvised and got round this and they sucesfully completed the journey thanks to the bottom of a washing up bowl and a portable compressor. You have to have a dam good knowledge of getting out of tricky situations on a trip like this or use the brains of a clued up guide....we opted for the latter. Any reasonable guided tour will have an itinery of spares and standards of the vehicle. Make sure you comply with the requests....its a long way from anywhere in the middle of no where.

Mont Saint-Michel in July

by windsorgirl

I was unable to enjoy my visit of Mount St. Michel during my last visit to France. It is a very small village on a very small island and once you add a few busloads of tourists, it becomes impossible to navigate through the very narrow laneways. I'm sure it would be very quaint and lovely without the hordes of people, so my recommendation is to visit during the off season.
