Alpe d’Huez

by wandering360

One of the favorite Tour de France mountain top finishes is the ski resort of Alpe d'Huez. The nearest town is Bourg d’Oisans which sits at the foot of Alpe d’Huez. Both towns can be reached by Transisère buses from Grenoble. (Note that buses first stop at the main VFD bus station at Boug d’Oisans before stopping at the Tourist Office or before going up Alpe d’Huez.)The legendary 21 hairpins / switchbacks of Alpe d’Huez are numbered from the top — starting just below the main commercial area where the Tourist Information Office is. The finish, however, is further up — just below the cable car station. If you are taking the bus up, you can stop at VFD bus station to reach the Tourist Office or a bit further up at Les Bergers which you can recognize by the huge parking lot. (I mention these two stops since they are easily recognizable.) Both stops have restaurants and other shops. There is...

Lourdes and The Pyrenees

by wandering360

One of the major transit points into the Pyrenees is Lourdes. When the Tour de France arrives into the region, the Tourist Information office in Lourdes is well-equipped to tell you how to see the tour. If arriving by train, head West from the train station to the main road (Rue Saint Pierre) and walk a few blocks South (downhill). The TI is in nice new, glass building (near the cenotaph) so you can’t miss it. If the tour goes through Lourdes itself, the TI will be able to supply you with maps of the exact route through town. If you wish to make a day-trip to one of the nearby summits (without your own transport), the TI will likely be aware of any special buses… but be aware that it will be full-day event (leaving Lourdes very early in the morning and returning late into the night due to road closures and congestion.)

CYCLING IN FRANCE

by pedroswift

Inspired to "get on yer bike" by watching the Tour de France on tv?As a waterway user in France, I use my bike every now and again to head off the canals to see what's over the hill or, more likely, to visit the boulangerie for a baguette. Some use is made of bicycles by the crew to ride ahead of the boat to have the lock keepers prepare for the locking procedure before the boat arrives. Saves time.Canals have a tow path beside them very suitable for cycling. It's usually sealed, smooth and safe - free of mechanized transport (cars/trucks). Another feature is they are relatively flat and make for easy bicycling so we see lots of touring cyclists as we navigate the canals.Anyone wishing to tour parts of France by bike is well advised to seek info on the canal system first. It is extensive with over 7 thousand kilometers of canals and attendant tow paths.Read review "Walking in France"....

What are the different roads like in France?

by Beausoleil

You've decided to rent or lease a car . . . or take your own. Now, what are the roads like in France? In a word . . . excellent. There are different types of road and they can easily be differentiated by their numbers. The AutoRoute always starts with the letter "A" followed by the route number, i.e. A6, A71, etc. These are dual carriageway roads (double highway with 2 or more lanes in each direction) and most of them are toll roads. The toll is usually lifted as you go around a city as they serve as a periphery highway or ring road. When you enter the AutoRoute, you go through a toll station, manned or automatic and pick up a ticket. At various points along the highway, you go through other toll stations to pay the toll up to that point. Most are manned and you can use cash. Some are entirely automatic and you have a choice of cash or credit card. We've only been through one that...

Ride the Petit Train Touristique

by pedroswift

Here is a generic "France" tip to remind you to research the possibility of riding the Petit Train Touristique in towns and cities on your travel plan. Many municipal authorities provide small rubber-tyred trains which do a guided tour of their town complete with recorded commentary in many languages. If you have a mobility problem, this is a great way to check out the high-lites of a place. Even if walking is not a problem, it is an ideal way to become oriented and to decide what attractions are worth seeing later on foot. Some hill side towns with cobble-stoned streets are best explored on a mechanical device. Most trains start their journey from the Tourist Information Office or a well promoted location on the town square.Check the photos for a typical train which does a 35 minute tour several time a day in Colmar. Costs €6 per adult.http://www.tourisme.fr/ will provide links to 3000...

Renting a car in France

by Beausoleil

We usually lease a car and if you are going for 21 days or longer, you may want to think about leasing. If your trip is shorter than 3 weeks, you will want to rent so here is my rental information below:Some rental companies won't allow drivers over age 70 or 72. Check age requirements before you rent. There are some minimum age requirements too. It is always good to ask . . . or read the fine print. You will pay more for an automatic but if you order ahead of time, you will have no trouble getting it. We always use an automatic. Any rental is cheaper if you order ahead. You will also want to make sure you can take the car into all the countries you plan to visit. Some countries have higher accident rates and some rental companies won't allow their cars into those countries. I suppose there are licensing agreements too. Whatever the cause, you can't take some cars into some countries, so...

Taxis and rates in Paris & throughout the country

by ATLC

Some general info about taxis in France can be found at franceby.com.Rates differ throughout the country. There is a list of tarifs (indication) for the different (95) départements (regions) at Taxis de France.com.It's in French but the general idea is:PC = starting rateA = return journey from Monday-Saturday during day timeB = return journey from Monday-Saturday during night time plus Sundays and national holidays.C = one-way journey from Monday-Saturday during day timeD = one-way journey from Monday-Saturday during night time plus Sundays and national holidays.HEURE = hourJour = dayNuit = night

Buying train tickets in France

by ManInSeat61

For French train tickets, or international train tickets starting in Paris or anywhere else in France, cut out the middle man and book direct with French Railways (SNCF) on their English-langauge website, www.tgv-europe.com. You can collect tickets at any staffed station in France or in many cases print them out yourself. There are usually some amazing cheap offers if you pre-book, maximum 90 days, for example Paris to Nice from 20 euros, Paris to Amsterdam from 35 euros, Paris to Florence from 45 euros. And zero booking fees or postage costs, what you see is what you pay.Important tip: If you're from the USA, DO NOT select 'United States' as your country as they then bump you to Rail Europe, their US agency, select 'Canada' instead (or 'Afghanistan' if you like, just for the sense of irony, it makes no difference as you aren't actually going to be sent anything) to remain on SNCF's site...
