Cycling in France

by Carenne

Cycling in France is easy, especially as you can transport your bike for free in many trains. But you have to know which trains carry bikes and what other regulations may be. Ter and Corail trains are regional trains which offer frequent bike transport facilities, ususally free of charge. For travel in TGV you must dismantle your bike and pack it into a carrier bag - very awkward and mostly unnecessary. I have been told one TGV a day per line allows bike transfer. To check it out see:http://www.fubicy.org/train/bike.htmlI usually just went to the tickets desk and asked for the next/best connection with bike transfer. And trains are not expensive either.

Discount admission and no lines!

by Jkjules

Purchase a Paris Visite pass at any metro station. Not only do you get discounts at almost all tourist attractions, but you don't have to wait in line! This is a HUGE time saver, especially during peak season. My friend and I by-passed a 2 block long line to Musee d'Orsey last time I was there in June. Don't purchase these abroad because it seems like some companies are trying to make a profit by reselling them.

Go by TGV

by Lady_Mystique

The TGV (Train a Grande Vitesse = high speed train) is the world's fastest train...and it was created in France! And it is SO smooth and comfortable!!It travels all over France and sweeps around Paris taking in Charles de Gaulle Airport (handy!!). It travels between the large cities within France and between outlying foreign cities.*Seat reservations are compulsory.*Eurail and Europasses are valid on TGV but you need to pay a supplement for a seat reservation.*You can check the connections, timetable, and make reservations online. Go to the website address below:

Take the Time to Travel Quickly... with TGV

by Porteplume

.Français:Translation will follow soon..= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = English:TGV, take the time to travel quickly! This is the new slogan for the major TGV TV and poster advertising campaign launched on 17 September 2000. The high-speed train is now a brand in its own right and has marked the occasion with a new logo and a new spirit. This is because the TGV is much more than just a train: it’s a modern, fast and friendly way to travel, a technological milestone in France and internationally and offers many new services to make your journey easier and let you enjoy more of life... You can see again this TGV TV ad. now:http://www.tgv.com/english/esprit_tgv/pub_tv.jsp.

No national bus services

by ATLC

Here's some general info:" in rural areas, buses are few and far between, and the scant services that exist are usually designed to meet the needs of schoolchildren, workers, and shoppers on market days. This means that buses usually run early and late in the day with little or nothing in between, and may cease altogether during the long summer school holiday period (July and August). Note that a city bus is generally called an autobus and a country bus a car or autocar. Smoking isn’t permitted on buses in France. The best place to enquire about bus services is at a tourist office or railway station. In large towns and cities, buses run to and from bus stations (gare d’autobus/routière), which are usually next to railway stations. In rural areas, bus services are often operated by the SNCF and operate to and from a railway station. An SNCF bus, on which rail tickets and passes are valid,...

Lease a Car instead of Renting/hiring

by pedroswift

Over the years, we have leased vehicles in France (& Italy) for periods ranging from 17 days to 3 months. A deal is available to non-Europeans using a vehicle for non-commercial purposes to purchase a brand new car without paying taxes. An up front price is negotiated for the period of the lease (minimum period 17 days) & the balance is held in the form of an IOU (or some-such).The price is usually cheaper than a similar model hire car for the same period with added benefits: It's a brand new car so no worries about the previous renter. Full comprehensive insurance is included. No drop off fees inside France. They do all the legals. They speak English. Roadside assistance included. Only downside: losing half a day use of vehicle to follow the makers service routine during a very long lease. Also the red number plates mark you as a tourist and more likely to have all your valuables in the...

Train travel in France

by ATLC

French rail is pretty good but you need to know your way around, since there are multiple regional companies that take care of the rail transportation. For foreigners it may sometimes be a bit confusing, since the national rail website (see link below) directs you to the TGV website if you click another language version.TGV is fine for long distance fast train but it won't give you the local trains that go to many more destinations than TGV.So, you need to use www.voyages-sncf.com and make do with the French version.A good explanation on how to book tickets directly from SNCF is here:http://www.seat61.com/France-trains.htm#How to use voyages-sncf.comReading this carefully before you book will save you a lot of time, money and irritation.Booking the TGV from abroad has to be done in advance. But once you are in France you can simply buy a ticket to any train (often including TGV) right at...

How overseas visitors can buy French train tickets

by GyuriFT

This tip is regarding how to trick the French railway web site to sell the ticket without hefty surcharges and without going via RailEurope rip-off.Here I will guide you how to buy a fictive Paris - Milan ticket on a fictive day (2010 August 31).The problem: SNCF (the French Railway) owns these RailEurope overseas outlets which charge a hefty premium for the tickets. Due some French domestic rail politic fight they have to: unique in the world, the French freight operation in money-losing, the passenger operation has to cover it. Usually it's the other way...Here is how I can beat the system. 1) Go to http://www.tgv-europe.com. That web site is owned by SNCF, the French railway. 2) As you start, you have to select the country you live in. The problem: every English-speaking country will re-direct you to some RailEurope web site... and even their U.K. operations won't display all...
