France countryside self drive holiday

by Adagio1

The psychology of devising a route.1) Weather- keep in mind the expected weather at the time you plan to travel.2) Vehicle- Choose your vehicle carefully. Never carry maximum number of passengers. Leave at least one seat free. Luggage must match the available space. Everyone has to cooperate here. Diesel vehicles are very cost effective.3) Roads- Use mainly the more scenic "D" roads you will see and experience much more.4) Distances - Using France's D roads restrict your daily distance to 300 to 400kms. Allow a stop every 2 hours if you haven't already stopped for photos.5) Accommodation- make sure you all agree on the standard of accommodation chosen, 2 or more nights at each place is wonderful. Logis de France have a wide range of locations and accommodation styles http://www.logis-de-france.fr/uk/index.htm ---- as do Gites of France http://www.gites-de-france.com/gites/uk/rural_gites.

Paying/Booking On-Line Train Tickets

by pedroswift

When using the internet to book train tickets at Voyages-sncf, the French:-"Retirez votre billet en billetterie automatique - Vous réservez et payez en ligne Vous retirez votre billet en billetterie automatique au dernier moment, juste avant votre départ. Attention : la carte bancaire ayant servi au paiement vous sera demandée pour retirer votre billet. " Translates as:"Get your ticket in a self-service ticket machine - You reserve and pay online You get your ticket at the self-service machine at the last moment, just before you depart. Warning: you will be asked to provide the same credit card used for payment in order to get your ticket." Please take note of the warning that the same credit card used online must be presented when getting the tickets from either the machine or the person at the ticket counter. If you don't, it's quite a hassle getting the original transaction credited...

Fuel Up at the Supermarket

by pedroswift

During road trip in France, we have found the Supermarche chain stores have fuel at the cheapest prices. They have cash only (or credit card) pumps where one pays at a kiosk after self-service and pumps taking credit cards in the pump itself. The later are available 24 hrs a day. See photo. We have found that our Australian issued cards never seem to work in the machines so we go to the cash pump and give our credit card to the attendant. Have never had a problem doing it that way during business hours.Be aware of the opening hours of the supermarkets. Most close for lunch and open half days on Sunday. See Photo. If you have a diesel car (usually more fuel efficient), get the right pump - gazoil.photo 1: Opening hours of Supermarket (typical)photo 2: Pay with cash or card at the kiosk.photo 3: Pay at pump with credit card 24 hours. (Your o/s card may not work!)photo 4: cash pump : pay at...

Renting a Car? Cover your A*s*! Insurance?

by pedroswift

We have rented automobiles several times in France (and elsewhere) for periods less than the minimum required to "lease" a car (our preferred option). see tip above.A quarter of a century ago we were happy to forgo taking out "extra insurance" to limit the excess liability in the case of an accident or damage to the car....with age comes wisdom!!?? We no longer take that approach - preferring to limit our liability. I suggest you do too!The usual deal when picking up a hire car is to present a credit card which leaves the hirer open to having arbitrary amounts charged to that credit card account if the car company deems it necessary because of damage. Read most contracts & you will find an "excess clause". You could be liable for several thousand Euro. Most companies offer insurance to reduce the excess - charging a daily rate which, in some cases, nearly doubles the cost of the hire.We...

Which is cheaper - pass or point to point

by Maranyc

Hi You can use this site to figure out which option is better for you - rail pass or point to point tickets:http://www.railsaver.com/I don't know about buying a pass though if you find it is necessary. However, if you buy your tickets at the sncf site you can often save money from their specials if you know your exact itinerary. For example I am planning a day trip from Paris to Dijon in December - I bought the tickets online for a total price of €34 - this is less than half of the regular price....Hope that helps and enjoy your visit!

Driving in France - basic rules

by vinc_bilb

French drivers are more disciplined because driving offenses are subject to heavay fines and/or driving licence confiscation.SUMMARY- No (or low) tolerance from police or gendarmerie to any driving offenses - Driving on the right (basic!)- France has verry stric drink driving laws (0.5mg/ml blood alcohols levels max) = 1.5 vine glass maximum! Fines and/or imprisonment if you're catch.- Tolerance on speed limits is low (< 6km/h) and radars are well spreaded- Default rule gives priority to traffic coming from the right, unless other indication (i.e on the left on the roundabouts)- Visibility vests and warning triangle are now mandatory (July 2008)- Some motorways are not tolled, especially around large cities- Do NOT overtake on the left or on the escape / emergency right lane !! WARNING: there are not at all systematic forwarning for the radar speed cameras. Don't feel yourself "out...

High Speed Train from Paris to Avignon

by Mstudwell

Originally, since I only had a few days in France ( including both Provence and Paris) I was just going to rent a car so that I did not waste time figuring out transportation. But after I accounted for the car, gas, tolls, and the time to drive (more like time it takes getting lost) I figured out that taking the high speed train to and from Paris to Avignon was must faster and affordable. I have also taken this train from a Paris station to Brussels and again- it was so worth it! It's a nice and clean train and is very similar to Amtrak in California. The ticket was less than $100 each way and took about 3 hours with stops or 2 hours direct from CDG airport to Avignon station. Plus it was a nice view of the country-side- I was there in July and saw more sunflower fields than I could count, lavender patches everywhere, and gorgeous farm houses that are probably older than the United...

Beware of Anywhere Anytime France Rail Pass

by wrldtrvlr3341

I've just returned from a 7 week trip to 8 cities in the 4 countries of France, Tunisia, Jordan and Egypt. I took an epicurean journey across France delighting my tastebuds to new experiences. I traveled across France on it's TVG trains, which are great, by the way, just not the Anywhere Anytime France rail pass.I found out about this rail pass via Rail Europe. It sounded like a travel bargain, and I had great experiences over many years with Eurail train passes. A bargain it is not. It is apparently so new that many train conductors have not been appropriately apprised of the program and I had an embarrassing episode with a conductor checking my ticket, even though I had my paid receipt, he could not conceive of why the individual tickets had a $0 cost on the ticket and attempted to make us pay again. With voices rising, I adamantly refused to pay another penny and suggested he call the...

By train inside Paris Disneyland

by hopang

The train inside Paris Disneyland is an internal transportation system for the convenience of visitors. You may take the train ride which circles the main Disney attractions between the various land from Adventureland to Frontierland, Fantasyland and Discoveryland to Main Street USA. It is a good way to rest your feet. Beside you are guaranteed of good view of Paris Disney attractions as the train runs above ground. The train is spacious, quite comfortable and has plenty of seats.
