Touring by car in France

by Adagio1

If you have limited time and an expansive itinerary. Position yourself with fast trains then hire a car but try and keep away from cities as parking is a real pain in most cities. Use the car for country sightseeing and visiting sites. I have just come back from a 30 day lease of a car through France, Nth Italy and Switzerland. Every time we tried to visit a city we lost a lot of time just finding parking and our GPS knew where the parking areas were, most were full. I would suggest you do the Champagne thing first then rent a car and tour more leisurely from a hub location. Watch out for the usual tricks when renting a car i.e check all damage and have the rep with you to mark the chart, be careful of dodgy CDW insurance read to see what you get etc. Also take a GPS if you can use one they take the stress out of any trip and you even get to stay married.

Warning about seat allocation restrictions on Rail

by kergunyah

Many years ago, my husband and I had a three month Eurail Pass and got great pleasure from travelling all over Europe without restriction whenever we wanted. We were able to take any train (if there were seats available) to anywhere at any time. Now, there are very few seats allocated to railpass holders. On our recent trip we had a France railpass. We were not allowed to travel in some trains of choice because those few seats were "taken up" by other railpass holders. At one stage we had to pay for our seats because we had to get to a destination at a certain time. Imagine our consternation, when we discovered that there were only four people in total in our whole carriage for the whole journey. I can only assume that was the case for most of the other trains we were "not allowed to travel on" with our pass.If this very restricted seat allocation continues, it will defeat the purpose of...

Heavy road tolls in france

by gauravm03

You pay to use the motorway in france and you pay by the Km. So its about 1 euro per KM. So like me if you are driving from Germany to Nice and want to avoid driving in Italy you enter from Stousberg and pay 57 euros as toll to reach Nice or take the slower route through Switzerland and pay about 30 euros n France and 27 euros in Switzerland. Although the swiss toll is one time and is valid for one year.Don't get me wrong, France is a beautiful country and I like drving but just beware this is an additional expense which could add up pretty fast.We spent around 100 euros in 4 days on tolls in our trip to Cote De Azur from Germany and went through Switzerland.

Paris Metro

by hopang

Paris Metro is a mass rapid transit sytem which is the second busiest in Europe after the metro system in the city of Moscow. Paris Metro handles approximately 4.5 millions passengers per day. It has a total of 16 lines mostly located underground with approximately 300 subway stations. The total lenght of tracks is approximately 210 kilometers. It was opened to the public as early as 1900. Paris Metro is the easiest means of transportation to travel from one area to another in such a large city! Most foreign tourists will use the system when they stay in the city of Paris for more than three days. Below are several Paris Metro's websites where you can check for details!

By bus from Airport to Nice

by hopang

You can travel by buses no: 98 or 99 operated by Ligne d' azur from Aeroport Nice Cote d' Azur to Central Nice, a distance of approximately seven kilometers. Bus no: 98 departs for Nice bus station and bus no: 99 departs for Nice railway station from the airport. It takes approximately 25 minutes to travel between the airport and Central Nice. Buses are available at an intervals of between 15 and 30 minutes from 6.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m. daily. It costs 4.00 euros for a one day pass. However the bus ticket can be used for local travels in the city of Nice for the entire day until midnight. You can make full use of the bus ticket to travel to the outskirts of the city or to travel from one end of Nice City to the other end! Or you may preferably purchase just one way ticket for 1.30 euros to the destination of your choice.

Airport Transportation Service - Paris

by gracejoan

I found this excellent private transportation service some time ago. I have been using it regulary and I have passed it on to many, many more. They meet you outside the security exit door with a sign with your name on it, take your luggage to anearby vehicle and you ar off. No calls to make or meeting places to look for..and no meter running should there be a traffic tie-up! They also keep track of your flight delays and make whatever adjustments. They do not take credit cards.I have used them so many times that my price is now only 40 euros each way! I doubt that it will go lower. They told me on my last trip that they would like to offer all my "friends" a discount, if they would just mention my name, Joan Grace. It seems that they are giving those people a 5 euro discount on their return trip for a round trip reservation. I'm sure when they return and make another reservation as a...

Travelling to London for Eurostar?

by MikeBird

I hadn't realised that if you have tickets on the Eurostar trains you qualify for discounted rail fares from your home station to London.I was lucky that when I went to my local station in Bedfordshire to buy our tickets prior to travelling, the clerk in the station ticket office asked me if I happened to be going on Eurostar. When I said yes he immediately offered us the cheaper rates for the tickets which saved about £35 for the 4 of us. Unfortunately we had to travel at the peak time into London and it would have cost us over £120 but in the end we paid about £85.The tip here is to buy your tickets in advance and say that you have Eurostar tickets - even better take them with you when you purchase your London bound tickets and you should be able to get a substantial saving.Have a good trip,Mike

Subway Rocks !!!

by djpublicenemy

If you dont have a good subway system in your country then you will probably be shocked from the Metro system in Paris. Its so organised, clean safe and cheap.Get a map from the staff counter . Follow the Colors of the lines, Check the names of the Last stops in the begining and end of the lines because that is the direction you need to take. check the Correspondances (which are the stations where lines intersect and you can change from one line to another). The staff is so helpful and they all speak english and other languages, if there is no one at the cashier, then go to the machine and its very easy to use, it will ask you to choose the language , and you will need to pay 1.6 Euros for the normal lines and 8 Euros for the RER (the big main lines that are red and blue)Example (Airport - Champs Elysees)At the airport of CDG, you will need to take something called the CDGVAL , to move...

Limited buses to D-Day sites

by JBourne

Firstly, the buses were cheap, clean and efficient, but using buses to get to the D-Day sites was a bit of a problem as they didn't run in the mornings. To get from Bayeux to Arromanches (Gold Beach), there was a bus going at 12noon and coming back at 2 or 5pm, but not much else. And nothing from there onwards as its a small coastal town. We went to the American Cemetery and Omaha Beach on the Wednesday but the bus did run til 1pm (as French kids have a half day from school on this day) and it returned at 5pm so wasn't as flexible as we'd have liked. Basically, I'd recommend taking one of the organised tours. You can fit much more in and don't risk missing things you want to see as you simply can't get there. Cost-wise it wouldn't be too different to what we paid on buses, trains and cabs. We did quite well in the 5 days we were there, although missed Pont Du Hoc and a few other further...

Trains: save money / early booking

by vinc_bilb

Trains are a great way to get around in France, anywhere.- long distances, use the TGV (Train a Grande Vitesse - High-Speed Train). Reservations are mandatory, book tickets online at voyages-sncf.com.- short distances: use the TER Booking and schedules: voyages-sncf.com (or ter-sncf.com) Good to know- If you'll be doing more than about 2 return journeys in France, and are younger than 26, getting a "Carte 12-25" will save you money. They cost €49, last a year and generally give a 50% reduction on ticket prices. - If you've booked online on Voyages SNCF, you can pick up your ticket when you get to the train station (e-ticket). Contrary to a common misunderstanding, this web site allows you to order even if you live abroad - Book in advance (example: Paris - Lyon (go and back) price going from 25 to 74 Euros (last minute booking)- Check best rates for one day (depending on the bookings,...
