Travelling around France by train and bus

by cubsur

There are few, if any, long-distance bus services in France as they cannot compete with the trains. Buses are organised at a regional or departmental level. These regional routes often do not cross departmental boundaries. This makes bus travel between cities very difficult. It is always worth trying the websites of the departmental councils for bus information. For example, all the buses in an area the author regularly visits around Perpignan are at http://www.cg66.fr/ - each department has a number (in this case 66) so the web address formats are the same, but you need to know the number of the department. Some departments have excellent information, some absolutely nothing. Most of the websites are in French only. For local train travel in France (the TER trains) visit www.ter-sncf.com which has links to pages for each regional train service. Again, almost all the information is in...

The Citröen Dolly

by Elodie_Caroline

To get around France, with nostalgia and ambiance, it's just got to be by a Citröen Dolly hasn't it. This is a funny, but cute, little French car that has been around since just after the second world war, so they have certainly proved their usefulness. I saw a programme on about these cars once, and they were showing that the seats could come out easily, so that the occupants could sit by the side of the road or in a field nad have a pic-nic and also that French farmers would take a Sheep or two to market in one of these useful little cars.I have pet-named these cars, 'Dolly deckchairs,' the dechchair part comes from the usually striped roofing material. Over here in the UK, the Dolly deckchair is usually associated with Lesbians and Teachers for some reason?

The Metro

by Elodie_Caroline

The Metro has probably got to be the best way of getting around Paris, wherever you are whilst there, you are always only a few hundred yards away from a Metro station. It's fast, it's on time and it's cheap! it's just a pity that the British rail couldn't take a lesson from the French isn't it? And aren't some of the station entrances so very beautiful!

The Ferry to France

by Elodie_Caroline

My favourite way of getting to France is by Sea Ferry; I just love the motion of the Ferry, it's like being on a very long fairground ride. The last time I went to France, the sea was very rough, everyone else looked a bit green around the gils with seasickness, but not little ol' me! I sat there and ate a dirty great fry-up for breakfast!: Egg, Bacon, Sausage, fried Bread, Mushrooms and Tomatoes. The way back was very choppy too. I went to get some drinks for me, my mum, my brither Derek and my step-dad Joe. I managed to get all the way back to our seats, carrying the drinks without spilling a drop, sat down with mine, and promptly spilled it over the table! Derek, who was only about 7 at that time, was sitting in the little children's Cinema right next to where we were sitting, when all of a sudden a great big long lurching creak was heard. Derek's head spun round in panic, "What was...

Tolls and Speed traps

by mileslunn

France has many tolls on its autoroutes, which can be quite pricy, around 10 Euros per 100km, so if you want to avoid paying the tolls use side roads, however speed limits are much lower there. France also has radar cameras for those driving at high speeds. Unlike Germany, France has speed limits on its autoroutes, so driving at excessively high speeds can result in large fines.

Driving

by smirnofforiginal

To drive in France you must be 18 years old & carrying your full UK driver licence which if it does not have a photo must be accompanied by you r passport. You must also have your vehicle registration papers and if you are not the registered owner you should have a letter from them granting you permission. Adequate insurance is required and a green card is advised (insurance company will normally give you one).Take care in built-up areas where the old rule giving priority to traffic coming from the right (Priorité à droite) still applies unless a yellow diamond indicates you have priority. Confusing!Children under 10 years old are NOT allowed in the front of the car.If you have an EU registration plate (with the 12 stars) you no longer need to display a GB sticker.Headlights MUST be converted (conversaion kits are available at motoring shops in the UK but if you forget you can pick them...
