Scams & WarningsWhile thieves...

by Masada

Scams & WarningsWhile thieves may operate anywhere, the U.S. Embassy in Paris receives frequent reports of theft from several particular areas:Paris:Gangs of thieves operate on the rail link from Charles de Gaulle Airport to downtown Paris by preying on jet-lagged, luggage-burdened tourists. Often one thief distracts the tourist with a question aboutdirections while an accomplice takes a momentarily unguarded backpack, briefcase, or purse. Thieves also often time their thefts to coincide with train stops so that they may quickly exit the car.The Number One Subway line, which runs by many major tourist attractions (The Grand Arch at La Defense, Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysees, Concorde, Louvre, Bastille), is the site of many thefts. Many thefts occur at the major department stores (Galleries Lafeyette, Printemps, Samarataine) where tourists often leave wallets, passports, and credit cards...

Be extremely careful in Paris....

by Skow

Be extremely careful in Paris. 2 times in a row in the restaurant waiter tried to cheat me by giving me less money back (I gave him 200 franks, and received rest up to 100). They are watching you if you calculate the rest, and if you do so, they are coming and excusing (sic!). Always calculate your rest! And beware of pickpockets. Visit in Paris ended with loss of my camera. Paris seems to be very unsafe due to pickpokets and cheating waiters.

Everywhere in the world is dangerous, the greatest danger is yourself. Don´t be an ass, don´t flaunt prosperity (eg. cash , jewellry, expensive items), don´t look lost, confused or nervous - even if you are, walk with confidence, deal with others with confidence!

by Nomad_2001

The fabulous boutiques and shops! Beware if you are with a lady friend in Paris, she is very likely to find the fashion and shopping irresistable. All may NOT be lost, however. I heard from someone who lost it all (literally) that if you are flat broke abroad (and without a plane ticket to return home) that a trip to the U.S. Embassy can prove helpful. While I don't know if it is official U.S. policy or not, I was informed that the embassy arranged for this U.S. citizen to return to the U.S. free of charge.

The only problem I had was at the hotels I stayed in. On both of my trips, I stayed in 2 different hotels, and both of the night time guys that worked there tried to make out with me!! Gross as hell. They were just very forward, and quite annoying!! I had to just shove them away, but I was very uncomfortable.

by Beefy_SAFC

Don't go out alone at night, as Paris is not exactly the safest place to be. Avoid back streets in the dark. Be careful after dark on the Paris Metro and RER trains and try to be part of a large group.* Picture - French Alps on the way to Egypt.Beefy at http://www.geocities.com/beefnetuk

Be careful of pickpocket and thief in France. These really happen! I lost my money twice due to the lack of awareness. I went to police station twice within 5 days. Good thing about it is I would never have chance to visit police station if I hadn't lost my money. And the policemen were so nice and charming!

by vysnaite

You wander through sun-flower fields with friends to one 'secret' bridge which goes above the railway of the very fast French trains. you stand on the bridge, see the train coming in enormously high speed in front of you, the driver sees you from afar, beeps and waves, an :) then the train goes right under the bridge, right under your feat whoa! that' the rush of adrenalin, you go back jumping among sunflowers seeds again! :) wine from the locals

by cindifer01

Near the Sacre Couer, a lot of artist will hussel you to pay more for a pinting of yourself. Be careful not to let them see you have a lot of money in your billfold or purse. Hide it and only let them see very little, or they will ask for more.
