France Has No Autobahn!

There is no speed limit on many parts of the Autobahn in Germany. This tip however is about France - which has NO open limit highways. If you get caught speeding, be prepared to be stopped, questioned for a half hour, and probably yelled at. Also be prepared to pull out your Visa card and pay your (HEFTY) fine right there on the side of the highway via a wireless machine the officer will have in his car.Can't pay? No problem, they'll tow your rental car and give you a ride to a lovely police station.The scenery along the French highways is breathtaking. Slow down and take it in.(Also have LOTS of Euros in coin with you - there are toll booths every half hour or so...couple of Euros a pop.)

Planigo Stole My Money

In August this year I booked a hotel room in France with Planigo, who were offering a competitve rate for the hotel I wished to stay at. The final amount for the nights booked was stated and I entered my credit card details. After the transaction was completed I noticed an extra 7.68 Euro had been added to the total and debited against my credit card. I wrote several emails to Planigo asking for the money to be refunded but none of their replies contained an apology or a satisfactory explanation for what they had done. Eventually Planigo said the extra amount was for breakfast at the hotel. As there were two of us staying for four nights, this seemed an unlikey explanation. It was a very good breakfast.When I checked Planigo's website there was no mention of breakfast being included or being charged as an extra, which means Planigo sold me, according to them, an extra product for an...

drop london or paris and use that time in some of the other places on your list. you can always do a 8 to 16 day trip of paris and london some other time.plus you and your son may turn out like many people that either hate or love paris no inbetween or hate or love london, no inbetween.for some two days in london or paris is one day two long while for others two weeks is not long enought. this problem does not seem to exist for any other european cities that i can think of. note. when you do the paris and london thing only book 3 days in the first city to start with. if you do not like it there go to the next place and if you do not like it there move on to another place. if you like the first place stay there half of your time before moving on to another place that you may not like at all.

Gypsies/beggars

Gypsies and beggars are common in Paris, they often are barefoot, with small children and babies, and they will beg in multiple languages. They even teach their children to beg. They will beg anywhere tourists go, and they may just swear at you in French if you look like you're not poor. Many of them make a good living begging and are not living in poverty. They also may follow you if you give them money or if you flaunt valuables. Don't give them money, don't respond to them. Also, the streets are dirty, so make sure to bring extra pairs of socks for your blackened feet! Other than that, it was a very fun city, be careful making change with people who know you're a tourist.

Subway pickpockets

While riding the subway in Paris last May, my wife and I decided to visit the Louvre on a Sunday morning. We were waiting for the train and a group of young girls came up behind us on the platform. One young lade rudely pushed in front of us just as the train was arriving. As we stepped on the train, I went to the side opposite the door to allow others to enter. The young girl blocked my wife's path just as she stepped onto the train and grabbed her arm while pointing at the subway map above. She appeared to be trying to ask a question on directions in a language we couldn't understand. Then she and her friends jumped off the train just as the doors closed and ran away as the train left the station.Moments later my wife noticed her purse was open and her wallet was missing. We spent the rest of the morning in the police station filling out a police report.

You would be wise to avoid photographing police officers of the two national general-purpose law enforcement agencies in France:The Police Nationale (civilian force; primary responsibility in urban areas; run under the Ministry of the Interior)The Gendarmerie Nationale (military force; primary responsibility in rural areas and military installations; run under the Ministry of Defence and under operational control, for most purposes, of the Ministry of the Interior)I have read several articles on French laws restricting photography of persons and specifically Police. They can reaction to having their photos taken. TV coverage of police often has faces scrambled to hide identity. I wasn't sure wether to put this under, 'warnings and dangers', or under 'local customs'?, anyway, I settled for warnings and dangers.I believe in, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do," and as I am not any kind of Wallflower or shrinking Violet, I'd never let anyone get the better of me; I would always show them that they had pissed me off. In England we use the two fingered salute to tell someone up yours or to F*CK OFF!! but in France they use this ... learn it well my friends.Hold your arm out with your hand in a fist, then smack your other hand onto your arm, just above your elbow, and swing your clenched fist up in the air. Nah, I aint swearing at you, honest! Most of the streets when I was in Calais were paved with those awful rounded cobblestones, you know, the ones that look like hard boiled eggs laid on their sides. No matter what you wear on your feet, those bloody things are really awkward to walk on and hurt your feet and ankles!
