SNCF Know How!

by dr.firas

SNCF is the French Railway service, it is great and not so hard to learn about it and to have tickets, informations, even by Internet, but some points which could really help a first time user of the French Railways:1-Some trips and destinations are by TGV always, and some by normal trains, it depends on the direction and city2-Never forget to composte your Ticket before getting on the Train, as it could coast you a hard Tax of 40 Euro, almost a Price of a one way Trip3-Never think of Discounts if you are older than 25 Years Old4-If you want to buy a year ticket of discounts, it is good but you will be forced to travel only in Saturday nights and get back in the Sunday morning!so please take notice, and Happy Traveling in France!

Smoking in France (by a non-smoker, cough! hack!)

by sheldon_j

First, sorry smokers. I must be the non-smoker that Bill Hicks couldn't stand when he called them "a pack of whining little maggots." You two-pack-a-day readers will be completely in heaven in France. On every second street corner there's a "Tabac" with a huge variety of lung-busting paraphernalia. But if you're a sensitive non-smoker from a place where smoking is not too common (guess that's me) then be prepared at certain times to put up with constantly watering eyes and sore throats (and smoky clothes) while in France.First impressions count: at the baggage carousel at Charles de Gaulle airport half the people waiting are madly lighting up a smoke... Inside the airport? EVERYONE SMOKES!!! Okay, maybe not everyone, but it seems that the majority do, meaning that at times France can seem quite "non-smoker unfriendly". Yes, there's "Defense de Fumer" (No Smoking) signs out in various...

long way to the top!!

by dovalyn

The Sacred-Heart Basilica of Montmartre is a beautiful place to visit. Inside, colorful and wonderful adornments are shown throughout it's architectures in this house of worship. There is one thing that I was not prepared for and it was the long walk up it's narrow stairs to the top of the Basilica. There is a fee for this about 5Euros. They should actually have a warning sign posted as to how many stairs there are and how long of a walk up it is because I stopped quite a few times to catch my breath but I pushed along because it seemed like there was no way to turn back. Climbing the stone stairs up, you can see the very worn impressions in the stone made by people's of long ago and today as they made this climb. The narrow walls are cold and thank goodness there were a few windows made out of stone so that the air can come through.

Watch out for the birds!

by sim1

Hahaha, when you have lunch in Montmatre you might have some serious competition with these birds, LOL. It was fun thought, they were kind of waiting until I finished my meal and see if there was anything left that I wanted to share with them. So at the end I gave some little pieces of bread, hahaha, and they weren't shy at all! As you can see :-)

Don't Order From the Neckless Waitress

by Martin_S.

We had gone to this idyllic restaurant, overlooking a river and park with our friends Cris and Gabrielle. Planning on a quiet evening out we sat down and prepared. Then the waitress appeared to give us our menus. After she left Tal mad the observation that "She has no neck". The fashion she was wearing made her neck disappear. For some reason this struck us as funny, very funny. When she returned with our wine order she said "Wine Anyone" and all of us broke down in helpless laughter. She repeated her question "Wine" and just looked at us as we could not breathe well at this point (have you ever laughed so hard and long that you had difficulty breathing??, try it, your ribs hurt, your lungs hurt, your sides hurt, and you love it). The poor waitress left the bottle and walked away. Every few minutes she would come again, just as we were starting to breathe again(between laughing fits) and...

Crazy Drivers

by traps

The drivers there are like whoah!!..They beat the red lights and drive real Mad!..HAHA! But yet again, maybe I come from a very strict country and have not experienced such drivers before. Anyway, do be careful when you are about to cross the road especially at the bends. It is way too dangerous if you do not look out for speeding cars.

Drug Dealers

by traps

My first experience was at the Antibes train station. There was this teenager who got busted and there was a ruffle between him and the police. The second experience was in front of my hostel in Paris. The guy was high on drugs and kept yelling at us that we were poor tourist!!Yikes!

Road Works

by gilljay

When out driving on a hot day, and you see road works - DON'T drive through the newly laid gravel. Underneath will be a layer of soft tar which will end up stuck to the sides of your car.It is possible to buy a preparation to remove, but hey.. you're on holiday.. take a diversion instead.

Tip Photo
The local drivers.

by Gili_S

The French attitude for driving is different from what I used in northern Europe, so, I try to ignore their stupidity way of driving and to keep out from any trouble. If you do have to drive in France, be extra careful and patience, don’t get nervous when other drivers harassing you, just stay on your line to get home safe.

Travel in the southern region...

by Mr_Furious

Travel in the southern region in such (unappealing) cities in the area around Marseille as Berre L'étang, Marignan, Vitrolles, etc. should be avoided because of theft and the risk of robbery. When my scooter broke down in Berre L'étang I only left it 5 minutes unattended to search for a garage and when I came back to youngsters were already trying to break my lock with an iron bar. Fortunately they ran away from me (do I look so scary?) and got the hell out of that damned city!!
