Women: if you are staying at a caravan park and need to use the bathroom facilities, try not to be the only one in there. I was spied on in the shower in a Cabourg caravan park by what I assume was one of the (male) workers who had been working in the yard and saw me go in alone. One consolation is that the would-be spy must have had a very sore head after I had kicked the wall hard enough to make his head bounce off of it (it made a very satisfying smack) and assaulted his ears with a string of English swear words. Had it been me spying however, I would have chosen a much more exciting target.

Be wary of pick-pockets. This is a growing problem is Paris. In the metro stations, you'll hear announcements over and over again warning you to be wary. If you can, buy a moneybelt and use it. I didn't use one when I was there but my wallet was always in my jacket pocket where I could feel it.

BEWARE PICKPOCKETS!!! While in the Louvre, my friends and I actually watched a pickpocket at work. We were trying to keep an eye on him while someone went to get security, but unfortunately he got away. Always keep your bag as close to you as you can because it's amazing how fast pickpockets work.

by boii

for those who dont't speak french: 'avez-vous dix centieme' seems to mean 'do you have ten cents', but really it's a direct translation of, 'show me where you keep your money because i'm about to pickpocket/rob/mug you'.

by Alis

Since Jacques Chirac's mayoral days in Paris when he instituted 'moto-crottes' to tidy up the numerous tons each year of Parisian dog droppings, things are supposedly a bit better. Still, it's a genuine concern for tourists who may venture into some of the more residential neighborhoods where residents walk their dogs. One important tip: 'Look DOWN before looking UP at all the beautiful old buildings!'

Most French people can be...

by kochamanita

Most French people can be nice, especially the non-Parisians. It seems the farther south you go, the better they get. But watch out for SNCF, the rail service. When I was going through France this summer on my way to London, I was dead tired. It was the middle of my 30 hour train ride from Wroclaw to London. I had just left Basel, Switzerland on my way to Paris to pick up the Chunnel train at midnight. I sat in the very last car, on the very last seat and put on bag over my head, the other in the bin behind me. Some Algerian-immigrant students came on and I went back to bed. Around 5 or 6 in the morning, I woke up and the bag behind me was gone, and so were the Algerians. I was hoping an SNCF guy took it, as was almost done on my Easter trip. But the guy in Paris doubted it. I had to wait forever to get a police report filled out. Since I had been living in Poland, it had quite a few...
