Wales - Not just coal mines and singing

by Elodie_Caroline

I have been to Wales quite a few times back in the 1980s, once for a camping hoilday, which was great fun, and the rest to parties at my aunties. The wonderful scenery of mountains and hills, and the pleasure of seeing Sheep roaming all over the roads out in the country is really cool. The first time I ever went to Wales was back in 1980.I got invited by this middle aged woman that I worked with called Doris and her husband John. They picked me up on the Saturday morning,I was quite excited,I was 19 years old and had never been camping before. We went in Johns metallic baby blue Ford Capri and the drive there was great, especially the thrill of going over the 'Seven bridge'.I can still remember the little houses sitting just below the old slag heaps from the old mines, they looked kind of sad and spooky, but kind of small and sweet too.We were heading towards a place in Gower called Oxwich...

History - Ile de Paris - Historical Fact

by Elodie_Caroline

I always had the notion that Paris was called 'Paris' because of the Greek God for some reason?.But it seems that Paris is called so because of an ancient tribe of Celts called the 'Parisii' that.came and settled on the 'Ile de la cité' on the Seine from further east, and then turned it into a little fishing village in around the year 250 BC.Actually, these weren't the first people that history showed that lived there, there were people there before the Parisii, but these are the people that Paris was named after. That's as good a reason as any for the name of a city I suppose isn't it?

Lithuania - Hill of Crosses - Historical Fact

by Elodie_Caroline

A few years ago now I got sent this wonderful postcard by my friend Cliffie, VT member,CliffClaven. When I saw it, straightaway I thought of The Crusades and of The Knights Templar, then I thought it looked like it could have came from somewhere in South America? Anyway, I turned it over and found that it had come from Lithuania and my thoughts about the Knights and The Crusades were quite accurate, these legends have always intrigued me.Below are two great websites to explain the history and whereabouts of 'The Hill of Crosses' this is one place that I would really love to see in my lifetime!HillOfCrossesSacredSites

Moscow - Red Square - Historical Fact

by Elodie_Caroline

Ugh! I saw this very weird TV programme on TV late one night. It was all about how these scientists have to keep the body of Lenin, the former Marxist leader, embalmed and have done since he died in 1924. I personally think this is awful, why don't they just give the poor man a decent burial and put him to rest? The orders to embalm Lenin and keep him more or less permanently on show were given by Stalin. He wanted to keep the idea of Communism alive, and being as Lenin was the one that started the terrible and bloody Russian revolution in the first place, Stalin thought it was befitting for him to be embalmed like the old Russian saints etc. After his death, for very many years afterwards, people used to go and view Lenins body in this awful place, there are actually scientific labs underground in the place on Red Square. Many scientists had been killed over the years because they though...

Italy - Cappuccino - Historical Fact

by Elodie_Caroline

Everyone that likes Coffee just loves a 'Capuccino'! But do you actually know where and how it originated? I head this on the radio one day a couple of years ago.In 1638, Venice was just about to be invaded by the Turks, but the Turks were called back to Turkey to fight another war instead, lucky Venice!Anyway, one of the Cappuccin monks at that time, Marco d'Aviano, found a bag of Coffee beans. The monks decided that the Coffee was very bitter, so they added milk and honey to sweeten it up....So there you go ladies and gentleman, you have a monk to thank for a delcious beverage.Underneath is a link to everything you ever wanted to know about drinking Coffee!EverythingCoffee

A little Polish history - Historical Fact

by Elodie_Caroline

Poland has a long and varied history and was once the largest country in Europe. The actual name of Poland comes from the name of the Polanie tribe. In the 9th/10th century, there was a few pre-state territories.Someone called Polanie, settled near Gniezno, had managed to unite most of the other tribes iiving in the area and established the state reigned by the Piast dynasty. The first Piast prince to be mentioned by contemporary historical sources was Mieszko I,who was baptized in 966, thus starting the process of Poland’s Christianization and placing the Polish state in the political system of Central Europe.I would have to say that the second World war must have been Polands darkest hour?.Not only had Germany invaded them in 1939 and were killing all of the Polish Intelligensia, but they also installed the Concentration death camps of Auchwitz and Sobibor to name but two.Contrary to popular...

The Christmas Truce - Historical Fact

by Elodie_Caroline

On Christmas day 1914, five months into the first world war, a truce was held between the British and German soldiers on the Western front. It started with the British soldiers hearing Christmas carols, such as Silent night coming from the German trenches over no mans land. The next morning, Christmas day, German soldiers started walking over towards the British trenches. Apprehensive at first, the British looked on, but they soon realised that everything was ok. The German and British soldiers started talking, shaking hands, posing for photos and even exchanging foods, chocolates and cigarettes, they even ended up having a game of football (which the Germans won). But the high ups, either side of the war, didn't like this new found friendship, they knew that the men wouldn't want to fight each other again if they got too friendly, they wanted the soldiers to get back into the fighting.So...

Council of Europe

by Mikebond

The Council of Europe is a pan-European organization aiming at strengthening the feeling of belonging to Europe as well as at forming and keeping a European identity. Thus, it is a cultural organization whose purposes only partially coincide with those of the European Union, although the majority of the Councile of Europe members are also EU-members.In 2006 all the European countries listed in my Europa homepage are members of the Council of Europe except Belarus', for the continuous human rights violations, and Vaticano, which has a status of observer. The 12-star flag is not only the EU-flag. Originally it was, and still is, the flag of Europe as a one. Therefore, the Council of Europe has the same flag as the EU.

Prague

Prague: full of tourists or not, its a magical place.Shown is the Petrin Tower - somebody must have liked the Eiffel Tower, but didn't have the money for a whole one: so they built it to one-eighth scale. And you take a funicular railway, which is part of the city transport system, to get there. The rose gardens in the foreground are gorgeous.Been back again (March 2006) - a bit different as my previous trips have all been in warmer weather, and this time I was visiting with friends. Still filled with tourists though. Added some new pics. The Petrin rose gardens were looking a bit bare this time of year ;-^ And the tower was shut for, well, not quite sure, actually.

I WAS TRULY IN HEAVEN!

by I-Believe-I-Can-Fly

On the top of MT. TITLIS, we climbed up the stairs to the outside and throw snowballs at each other in August. Suddenly the thick fog began to cover the area quite quickly. I just paused and contemplated the foggy view, content to be as still as possible. Clouds were literally passsing throug us! I was truly in heaven!
