BRUSSELS

by hevbell

Day 4 - We spent the day with Peggy who we met in the hostel. The three of us ended up spending the day at MiniEurope and the Atomium which were outside the city centre. It was a fun day though and we rounded it off with a trip to Pizza Hut! The one bad thing that happened this day was my camera jamming while it rewound the spool. I wasn't able to use the camera again the whole holiday although I now wish I had gotten a throw away camera but I guess they weren't so popular back then. Anyway after returning to the city we walked around in the Grand Place for a while and then walked back to the hostel. I still wasn't all that impressed with Brussels but I hope to go back soon and get to know the city better.

BRUSSELS

by hevbell

We arrived in Brussels around lunchtime but didn't really do a lot that first afternoon. It took us long enough to find the hostel since asking for directions just led us to a load of public telephones rather then Rue d'Eliphant... To be honest my impression of Brussels wasn't that great but I don't think I really saw enough to give it a proper chance. I just seemed to see a lot of graffiti and stuff. We met some nice people in the hostel who recommeded a nearby cafe for dinner. They said the pizza there was delicious and we weren't disappointed. While sitting outside enjoying our pizza a girl stopped to ask where the hostel was. It later transpired that she was in the same dorm as us and we arranged to spend the following day sightseeing together. As far as that first day in Brussels is concerned it was definitely the pizza. My friend still talks of it as the best she has ever had!

AMSTERDAM

by hevbell

I'd been hoping to hook up with a friend from Utrecht, Carmen, and was looking out for a message from her on the hostel noticeboard. Nothing turned up but it later transpired the guy should have given me her message when I arrived. She came to the hostel that day but I didn't know she was coming. Chances are I was in the hostel at the time too. I called her at home and we arranged to hook up when I returned to Amsterdam on the way home.DAY 3 - We left the hostel early, and thanks to the big map in the hostel and some help from the cute guy on the desk we found our way to the pick up point. When the bus eventually turned up it turned out that it had been overbooked but luckily both of us got on no problem

AMSTERDAM

by hevbell

DAY 2 - My friend left her case beside the lockers in the hostel since we hadn't been given keys, only to wake up in the morning and find it missing. Luckily it turned out that the hostel staff had taken it downstairs for safe keeping! Gave us a scare though!I forgot to pack shampoo (duh!) and since we hadn't expected a heatwave we had no sunscreen so a shopping trip was called for. That was how we spent much of the first day before going to see Anne Franks House which was a very moving experience. My impressions of Amsterdam though were of a lovely city. I loved all the beautiful canals and buildings. We spent some of the evening in the hostel bar. One of the guys who worked there turned out to be Scottish so we had a good chat with him, even though he was a celtic fan! There was another guy there from Edinburgh so we had a regular little 'Scottish away from home' club going on.
