Forget the Capitals... Europe...

by call_me_rhia

Forget the Capitals... Europe is so much more and so much better than them. Let's start with a selection of my favourites, more or less in radom order.Top of the list comes Mostar in Bosnia I Hercegovina, the town where I left my heart: so much destruction there, I was always in tears - and so much hope for a better, more peaceful future. No other place I've been to has such positive vibes.Sticking to the Balkans area, Dubrovnik is surely worth a mention: a wonderful walled-town steeped in history and art. Budva, in Montenegro, is very similar to Dubrovnik, but on a smaller scale - and the surrounding sea is a bit dirtierFor mystical places the United Kingdom and Ireland are the places to be: not only for Stonehenge but also for Avebury and Glastonbury (all in England), but also for Maes Howe in the Orkney Islands in Scotland and Newgrange and Poulnabrone in Ireland.Art: Italy's got just...

DO NOT TRY TO SEE EVERYTHING!!...

by feline01

DO NOT TRY TO SEE EVERYTHING!! I have made repeated trips to Europe and still see new places everytime I go. Rushing through thousands of years of history takes away from the total experience. Slow down and enjoy the local lifestyle. Being the first and only tourist (at least for 15min or so) on the Jungfrau glacier in Switzerland. Spending my 23rd birthday in a campsite on the banks of a fjord in Norway. Meeting people over 11 years ago and still being friends with them.

by Dany_Kulta

You absolutely must know that countries have different habbits, and that a happy travel always wait you if you are open to meet different ways of life. My best moments were surely on parties, or when discovering the beauty of a country ! I have a good memory of the ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki last summer, the most beautiful sights, many youngs drinking Lapin Kulta, and an incredible sunset !!!

take at least a day visit to Eurodisney. The most fascinating trip I have ever taken in my life. Whoever said Disney is for kids was absolutely wrong. We went without any great expectations and will be happy to go again just to spend more time in Eurodisney. the public transport system in London & Paris, which is very organised, close locations, quick, efficient, clean and user friendly.

by monkeyshine

You must get to Spain. Specificlaly, if you like untouristy places, go to Galicia, see Santiago de Compostela, drive or bike down the coastal roads (I biked it and it was wonderful) stop in Bayona near the Portugese border. Try to mix with the people, too. Spainards can be a bit standoffish at first, but that quickly passes and when you make a Spanish friend, she/he is a friend for life. Watching the sun rise from atop an underground wine cellar dug hundreds of years ago in a field alongwith 50 or so others in this field during fiestas in a small village of Burgos with hundreds of others who, after dancing in the plaza with the whole village to a live band until 2am, had spent the rest of the night going down into these cellars, one to another, cellar-hopping, drinking sangria by candelight in these ancient earthen cellars, singing and guitar playing, until everybody surfaced together,...

by TravelGirl2

See Stockholm - 'The Venice of the North' Water, water everywhere!!! See Paris - city of art & romance. See Rome - The Vatican, beautiful fountains, bellinis on Piazza Navona. See Prague - nonestop ART and entertainment, full of life.. a big Greenwich Village! See Bruges (Belgium) - medieval town with so much charm.. canals! See London... see Amsterdam... SEE & DO it all!! MY overall advice: Completely remove yourself from all things comfortable and every bit of normalcy for 2-3 months. See what life is like elsewhere. Get an appreciation (or lack thereof) for where you live. It's a life-changing experience! Sitting canalside in Annecy, France.. on the 'purist lake in Europe.' AND taking the overnight ship from Helsinki to Stockholm with my friend. Met some cute Swedes on the way!!! ;)

Use Internet Cafes

by bl00girl

If you're in a metropolitan area, you'll have no trouble finding an Internet cafe. There's always one in the main metro station. The ones I like are EasyEverything. I've used EasyEverything in New York and Munich, and they're cheap and easy. I plan to use them in Paris and London when I go in a few weeks. Not only can you keep in touch, but if you've done a lot of planning online, you can get any information you might need for the next day online. You can find out before you go where the EasyEverythings are by visiting their website at www.easyeverything.com

Take a train. Europe's trains...

by bl00girl

Take a train. Europe's trains are just amazing! They're efficient, clean, safe, inexpensive, plentiful and if you catch the right one, very fast. The fantastic thing about the train is that you can actually see your surroundings through the window. It's a much better way to see a new area than plane travel, which doesn't afford many views. It's pretty easy to buy tickets when you're in Europe. I've seen several websites state that you have to buy tickets from North America, and I have no idea what they're talking about. You can buy any ticket you want when you're there. If you know for sure you want a specific date and time, it might be wise to purchase just to ensure the train isn't full. The best place to buy tickets from is RailEurope(www.raileurope.com) Riding through Bavaria, the southern part of Germany. We stayed in Munich and took a day trip to Salzburg and another one to Castle...
