    the church's stunning interior

Though the monastery dates back to 1455, the site has a somewhat longer history, being cited as the place where Rasso’s relics were brought for protection in 955. The current Baroque structures are from the remodeling in 1712. The impressive church is the burial place of noted German composer Carl Orff.

There is more to do here.

    a town unto itself

the gang on the way to the church

The roaming complex that is Andechs is a small town unto itself and quite self-sufficient due perhaps at first to religious pilgrims but now to all those who come to seek its veritable charms. If there is a tourist need, the monks are there to satisfy it from their own butcher, dairy, liqueur producer and of course brewery. Throw in a Baroque masterpiece of a church and on clear days, mountain views from their thronging beer garden and you have a recipe for a perfect outing.

How to best get to Andech’s.

Drinking Andechser Beer is the best you can do in Andechs, but be carefull, it is very strong and makes you dissy and unable to drive home in your car !
Andechser beer is made by the monks of Andechs, so it cannot be a sin drinking it ! :-)

    Walk from Herrsching

    Follow the sign!

While you can get here by bus, I find it's a lot more fun to simply walk from Herrsching. There are two paths to get to Andechs: one via the "Horndlweg," and one via the "Kiental." The former is a bit longer (roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes), but has better views in clear weather-- sometimes with views of the Alps! Sadly, the Alps were not out when we hiked. The Kiental path takes about an hour. It's a more woody path following the stream and with a long walk along a pleasant pasture. Sometimes, the cows will come out to check on your progress.

    The church from a distance

While plenty of people know about the Andechs brewery, not so many people take a look at the church. It's quite nice, and certainly worth a look. I do, however, strongly recommend you visit the church before you head for the more famous bräustuberl...
