Munich Hbf...we paid our way! by jayhawk2000 Augsburg was the closest we could get to Munich on the first Saturday of Oktoberfest, so we were up early to catch a train that would get us in to see the beginning of the opening parade. The station was busy with revellers all kitted out in their gingham and suede. We had a go at buying our ticket using a machine, but as near as I could fathom there was no simple way of buying a ticket for Munich. Maybe it was for local journeys only? Anyway, a young woman came up, asked if we were heading to Oktoberfest and wondered if we would like to join her and a friend on the same travel ticket. I'd head of these travel cards, where up to four people travel on one discounted ticket, so it sounded legit at first. She took over the machine and began pushing buttons and I swear I saw her skip over the correct button. In fact, she seemed to not know which button to press at first. When it came time to pay, I said I was going to use my card. There was no way I was going to hand over any cash. She made a face, we made our excuses and bought our own tickets over the counter. As Christian said, 'Where is this friend she's supposed to be with?' And what do you bet that in the scrum for a seat, she disappears with your cash and you're left holding a worthless ticket?? She might have been a friendly local, or she could be working this scam on tourists trying to get to Munich. Leave a Comment

by richiecdisc DO NOT go to Augsburg on SUNDAY as many things are closed. First, the main pub I wanted to visit was closed down permanently and then this place that I had chosen for lunch was closed on Sundays. It's called the Goldener Gans Braustubbe and is at Weitgasse 11. It is proported to have excellent food and is the brewery tap for Goldener Gans, the oldest brewery in Augsburt (1346). Luckily, right up the street on Weitgasse was a Hasenbrau outlet that I described in my memory. Leave a Comment

Maximilianstraße by Kathrin_E The old town of Augsburg can be walked. You can reach all main sights and the train station on foot. Do not, however, underestimate the distances. Wealthy and powerful Augsburg covered quite a lot of ground even centuries ago. The old town is large. If you want to visit, for example, the cathedral, the Fuggerei and St Ulrich and Afra and return to the train station, you'll walk a considerable distance. Wear comfortable shoes. Allow enough time. People who have difficulties walking are advised to get a day ticket and use public transport as hop-on-hop-off to save themselves some kilometres.
