Luciano (right) and Me, Hofbrau, Bamberg by antistar This is a cosy bar restaurant right outside the Alte Rathaus, on the Cathedral side of town, with warm lighting and dark, half-timbered walls. When I entered I expected some kind of sausages and sauce kind of place, as it advertised itself as Franconian, but it actually took me a little by surprise. The first thing I noticed was that nearly every dish had Kurbis in, which is a German word I'd not seen before. I asked the waitress what it was, and she pointed to the oddly shaped green and yellow vegetables that were on every shelf: pumpkins. Strangely enough I'd never eaten pumpkin before in my life, but had dreamt about it the night before, because of a picture of my neice eating pumpkin soup from a carved out pumpkin bowl had set me thinking. Taking it as an omen I ordered the pumpkin ravioli, and was pleasantly surprised to discover how many different flavours they could pack into a dish that was mostly pasta and pumpkin. I think there was some pine nuts, garlic, basilica and strong parmesan cheese in there as well. Luciano had the rumpsteak, which he claimed was one of the leanest he had every had. Overall a very nice restaurant, with staff who smile and speak some English, and not all that expensive for the quality of the food. The restaurant Schlenkerla is *the* place for having an original local dark beer called "Rauchbier". The restaurant exists since 1678, and since then this beer is brewed and offered there. The ambience is cosy, rustic. It is located in a former Dominican convent.
Rauchbier! (but they also offer great local food) Leave a Comment Theme: Pub/BreweryPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Dominikanerstrasse 6Phone: 5 60 60Directions: old town, Bishop's side

Cafe Rosengarten by german_eagle This cafe is the perfect place for a break during your exhausting sightseeing tour of the churches etc. It is located in a wonderful garden, offering great views of the town and the St. Michael convent on the hill vis-a-vis. It is a charming cafe with a nice terrace, open in summer season only (May-Oct).

Kochloeffel-Fried Chicken & the Internet by shellybelly567 The food here really isn't all that great, but they do have two internet terminals. While it was hot and loud in there, going online is pretty cheap (50 cents for 20 min) and this was the only "internet cafe" we could find in Bamberg, Leave a Comment Theme: Fast FoodPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Gruener Markt 18 96047 BambergDirections: Altstadt, pedestrian zone, near H&MWebsite: www.kochloeffel.com

great views of the city by richiecdisc I have always enjoyed the beers at the Brauerei Spezial and since it right across the street from Fassla Brauerei where I normally stay, I’ve been in there a fair amount. So, I was excited to finally get to their beer garden on top of Stephansburg. It is a part of town that locals flock to in the summer to escape the summer heat. There’s always a breeze blowing up there. Even better are the views. You can get a great panorama of the magnificent architecture of Bamberg while enjoying their house brews.
There are two areas, one with waitress service and one where you can serve yourself. You just go up to the food window and order your meal and then proceed to the beer window and grab a nice mug of their lightly smoked beer. We just had some cold local meats to stay cool and enjoyed the great views Leave a Comment Theme: Pub/BreweryPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Sternwartstraße BambergPhone: 0951 / 54887Directions: http://map.fraenkischer-tag.de/cgi-bin/perl/intern-link.pl?GK=4420154,5528295_dreieck&city=bamberg

by bonio Probably the most famous of the breweries in Bamberg. Producers of Rauchbier or smoke beer. Someone said it tastes like Bavarian smoked cheese, and they are not far fom the truth. As ever I develpoed a liking for it and managed to spend the evening there but Mrs Bonio was not so keen, other non - smoky drinks are available. Tasty food on offer too. This one is very busy, try to pick a good time to visit. a door I finally walked through by richiecdisc It’s funny to me now that I never visited this great little place. I had been to Bamberg numerous times but for some odd reason, I had not given it a chance. What with so many other great breweries in town, I didn’t want to take the chance. And besides, Mahrs is right across the street. But I was glad I finally did walk through that old wooden door. It was summer so we sat outside in their lovely little courtyard and ordered up their much sought after Pils. What arrived surprised me as perhaps the best example of the style to be found in town. Rocky head, light bodied and marvelously hoppy
It was about two in the afternoon and as is the custom in this part of Bavaria, they do no serve food except at lunch and dinner times. We needed something to eat as we had a big day of drinking to do. The waitress was most helpful, telling us to go up the street to the butcher shop and bring back whatever we wanted. We had some local Franconian sausages that complimented the beers perfectly Leave a Comment Theme: Pub/BreweryPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Wunderburg 5 BambergPhone: 0951/26646Directions: This is right across from Mahrs-Brau and worth stopping in for their Pils.

by bonio Arrived here by accident, out for a riverside walk and spotted a great looking beer garden, decided to call in for a beer, as you do! This is a place used by people boating on the river and walkers along the side, a marvellous setting. Anyway one beer became two while we watched the boats on the river and people swimming in it, the food looked very tempting and proved to be excellent. This is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Muehlworth 18aPhone: 24485

by bonio As I said in my hotel tip earlier this is a brewery that has accomodation too, and it's very good. Major problem for us was actually getting out of the place, twice a quick beer before we go out turned into OK we'll stop here to eat too. That tells you that food and drink excellent, good veggie choices for Mrs Bonio. There's two rooms inside aswell as a covered drinking area on the way in and a courtyard for the good weather.
