As the Old Old Town Hall is located on an Island, you need two bridge's to reach it, both are pedestrian only!
The ancient Lower Bridge passes through the archway of the town hall with its beautiful Baroque paintings on one side, and on the other side one is medieval black & white walls.
This side was also plastered over with paintings in the Baroque times, but when a nearby bridge was blown up in World War II, the plaster fell off, so it is now kept with the original medieval walls showing.
From the Bridge there are good view's to Little Venice.
It was also here where Claus Graf Schenk von Staufenbenberg attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler on the 20.7.1944. He was shot dead after the failed attempt.
There even is quite an interesting story/legend to the Bridge...........
Quote.....
"A famous master builder and his journeyman, while building the Bamberg Cathedral's tower and the Bamberg Bridge, entered into a wager which could finish first.
When the master was almost finished, the journeyman was still far behind, so the latter made a pact with the devil, that he should quickly build the bridge.
In return, the devil would receive the first living being to cross the bridge.
The devil quickly went to work and was finished within a short time. Then the journeyman fetched a rooster and chased it across the bridge. The devil angrily departed with it.
The master builder of the tower was so irritated with the early completion of the bridge that in his dismay he threw himself from the tower."
Just love those stories!

Eventually, I found the Visitor Information Centre when it was closed!
LOOK for the building in my photo. I came from the River and found the beautiful rose garden by it.

Green Market (Grüner Markt)
The Green Market area has quite a few sights to see. It is quite a long square, and has a couple of fountains.
I rather liked the The fountain of Neptune. It is also called "Gabelmann" which means "Fork Man," and was built in 1566. It was the last wish of a former member of the city council.

The Cathedral, [Bamberger Dom St. Peter and St. Georg] with its four Tower's can be seen from afar.
The cathedral was founded in 1004 by the emperor Henry II, and was consecrated in 1012
The first cathedral from 1012, burnt down, so did the second, and the third Cathedral I was viewing today, is the final one, and built in late romanesque style.
Pope Clement II., who was a bishop of Bamberg before his papacy, has his resting place in the western choir of the cathedral. It is the only tomb of a pope outside France and Italy.
Unfortunately, I was too late, and the Cathedral was closed.
If this happens to you, do have a good look at the Cathedral itself, and see if you can find the four different architectural styles. The Romanesque and Gothic (the 2 spires on the right), the Renaissance facade of the Alte Hofhaltung, and the Baroque ensemble of the New Residence.
I also loved the sculpture's beside and above both entrance door's.
It was beautiful outside, and I believe it is inside too!

I was on the bridge at the Old Town Hall, when I saw the statue of Empress Kunigunde.
I wondered who she was!
Well, it turned out that she was the Wife of Emperor Heinrichs II, and is particularly admired in Bamberg.

Monastery gardens of St. Michael’s
After viewing the Monastery, we then walked around the side and found some very nice garden's.
Not only were there garden's, but an excellent viewpoint over Bamberg. There was even a set of binocular's here. The view was great. I could see the path below, which is known as the "Benedictine Path." I could also see a vineyard within the old monastery gardens.

THE New Residence is just across the way from the Cathedral. This was a huge sandstone building, built with four wing's. It was the seat of Prince Bishop Johann Philipp von Gebsattel in 1602.
The Prince Bishops of Bamberg lived and governed there until 1802.
It is a huge building, but was closed, so I couldn't go inside!

The Church was originally constructed as a University Church and the Church of the Jesuit College.

We walked around Bamberg, and one of the places I liked was "Little Venice."
I thought it was ever so pretty!
It is the former fishermen's district in Bamberg's Island City. There were many half-timbered buildings squashed together and hanging out over the river. Most were different, and it was interesting seeing the differently designed home's.
These quaint half-timbered home's have balconies where to sit and enjoy the river views, and pretty little Cottage garden's. Most were built in the Middle Ages.
I loved it here, and sat for a while, watching a row boat gliding down the River while the Rower's were having a rest.
Walk along the pathway that continues on from Am Leinritt for the best view.
It was quiet, it was beautiful, it was historical, it was lovely, it was PERFECT!

It is the city Dom-or real name St. Peter's and St. George's Imperial cathedral. The church was built under the direction of Emperor Heinrich I in 1002, and it took 10 years to complete. He wanted to create a "new Rome" in the Eastern part of his domain. The church was burned down in 1185, and a third one built on site in 1215 with romanesque and gothic styles. Inside there are tombs of Heinrich I and other royalty, plus a statue of the "Bamberg Horseman-Rider" with unknown origin or purpose. The staggered carved stone of the door entry has the figures of the saints the church is named after, and its founder, King Heinrich and wife. It is inside along one of the columns near the front entrance. WE were not allowed in that day on Sunday, so enjoy it. The four towers are definitely a standout on the horizon for many miles
