You can reach Bamberg very easily by a one-hour train ride from Nuremberg. The railway station in Bamberg is not too far from the Old Town, so you can just walk there without using any other public transporation.

Once you get to Bamberg, however that may be (buses in Germany are relatively inexpensive), getting around town on your own two feet is probably the easiest way to get around, especially in the Altstadt (old town).
The Altstadt is a 15 minute walk from the bus/train station and portions of the Altstadt are pedestian zones.

I arrived via car my first time through but this time out, I took the train from Prague for 1152 kc ($32). It took about five hours.
Bamberg is a lovely town to explore on foot but there are some boat trips run on the River Regnitz.

For us to visit from the UK the easiest way is to fly to Nuremberg and the train to Bamberg. Air Berlin fly from Stansted once a day, then only 45 minutes on the train.
