  • Day tripping from Bamberg

Bamberg is a great hub for daytripping. Munich is only two hours away by train and Nueremberg is less than an hour. The options go on and on. Trains are very regular and remember if you travel on regional trains you can use the Bayern ticket which will get you and your family (up to 5 people) to any towns within Bavaria for around 30 Euro. The...

  • Alte Rathaus Frescoes

The frescoes on the Alte Rathaus are really quite stunning. They are the creation of one Johann Anwander a German fresco and Rococco painter of some note. The frescoes were painted in 1755 when Anwander was aged 40 years. He died in 1770.When I think that these works are more than a quarter of a century old, I can't help but wonder how they are in...

  • Alte Rathaus

The amazing Old Town Hall (Alte Rathaus) sits in the middle of the River Regnitz, between the Obere and Untere Brucken. Pushing brazenly into the onrushing waters of the river's weir, the oldest part of the Rathaus juts out precariously over the water's edge. The 15th century half-timbered building falls all the way down the side of the bridge...

  • Pumpkin Pasta, Franconian Style

This is a cosy bar restaurant right outside the Alte Rathaus, on the Cathedral side of town, with warm lighting and dark, half-timbered walls. When I entered I expected some kind of sausages and sauce kind of place, as it advertised itself as Franconian, but it actually took me a little by surprise. The first thing I noticed was that nearly every...

Had a meal of 3 sausages and cabbage [ euro 4.80 ] plus beer 0.5L at euro 2 30. This is a private brewery of Privatbrauerei Fassla Bamberg. since 1649. In the same street across the road is another Brahaus but was satisfied with this one. Fass la has a coat of arms of a Dwarf rolling a beer barrel, in their website. The system of payment is each...

  • Good place to go

This is the best club I have been to in Bamberg, as I always have fun. Hardly any Americans go there, and drinks are priced reasonably. It's more of a spot for the university students, so there is usually a lot of hot women there. They all know English, so if they say they don't speak it, that means they don't want to talk to you. They have live...

  • Bar Hopping

I have spent a lot of time in Germany (off and on for 4 years), and have been to a lot of different cities. Bamberg has some of the best beer in Germany. It is called RauCHbier, and is like bacon in a mug. I guess this is the special beer of Bamberg because I have not seen this beer in any other city. Also breweries can be found all through the...

  • Warmth while you dine.....

The weather took a turn for the worse whilst I was in Bamberg and it was really very bleak and cold on one day in particular. Here in Australia during the cold weather, Sidewalk cafes have gas heaters which are turned on to keep the diners warm. In Bamberg (and I guess in other parts of Germany as well) they provide woollen blankets for the cafe...

Walking in Bamberg....Cobblestone's, so try to wear sensible shoes so that you don't sprain an ankle.I also found around the Cathedral area, that the road isn't clearly marked. All is in grey, and there are stone "canon ball's" for marker's. I was wandering around, gazing up and down, not realizing a road came through the centre, until a car came...

  • WALKING TO THE CATHEDRAL

Bamberg is built on hills. There is the "OLD" area that is flat for walking, but if you want to walk and see the other sights, like the Cathedral and the Residence, then it will be quite an uphill hike on cobble stone street's. I liked the walk, because there were interesting home's and sight's on the way, BUT............It is no good for...

  • Though not a huge...

Though not a huge international tourist town, it is a noted one for older Germans and hence there is the requisite pedestrian shopping mall. It's unfortunate that some of the old town is scarred with the ugly intrusions to an otherwise timesless place. Still, side by side with the shops are great old architectural expamples.

Bamberg What to Pack

  • richiecdisc's Profile Photo

by richiecdisc Updated Dec 10, 2004

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Luggage and bags: Though the train station is close to the city center, a backpack is a lot easier to lug there than a suitcase on wheels.

Photo Equipment: Lots of film, Bamberg is one of the most picturesque cities in Germany. A wide angle lens come in handy for taking shots of buildings that otherwise always seem too close.

Outside of the five star Bamberger Hof Bellevue hotel were rows and rows of sparkling luxury cars, like huge Beamers, slinky Mercedes coupes and Italian sports cars.
