Fischerstueberl is the best place to taste freshly smoked fishes of Koenigssee. They start smoking their catch at 07.00a.m. every morning and at 11.00am., when they open their small restaurant and kiosk you may taste these freshly smoked fishes already. Fischerstueberl has only a few seats inside and outside, and many standing-places and it is also the best choice, in case that you dont want to waste your time hanging around in a restaurant, but want to go hiking in St.Bartholomae !
Of course you may also have all dishes packed for a picknick to take away and eat at a romantic place with a view in the mountains!
Favorite Dish: The day I was there they had this on the menu:
smoked trout, bread & butter
and a glass of wine for 7,90 Euros
a roll with smoked trout for 3,00 Euros
smoked trout, bread & butter for 5,50 Euros
Fischerstueberl is open daily from 11.00a.m.
from mid April till end of October

This is a small Stuberl on the way into the Schlossplatz from the Marktplatz.
I have never eaten there but frequently buy food to take out.
There is Crispy Belly Pork, Roast Pork, Schweinhaxn (Crispy Pork Knuckle), Frikendelle (Burgers) and Roast Chickens.
The food is delicious.
If you are staying self catering and want to take in a meal you won't get much better than here.
Biggest problem is buying too much.
The biggest surprise is how inexpensive it is.
Unfortunately it closes at 6pm an Monday to Friday and 1 pm on Saturday. Closed on Sunday.
So you have to eat early, however if you have an oven in your accommodation it will keep perfectly until a while later.
Favorite Dish: Frikendelle & Crispy Belly Pork

We enjoyed a cool drink high up on the sunny terrace surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. The restaurant sits on an elevated position at 1,834 metres so prices are a little higher too to compensate for the transportation costs. Here there is ample seating with lots of shade from the sun's heat provided by the colourful parasols. Service is quick and the waiters friendly, always ready with a little joke, in our case about the weather we had brought with us from Scotland!! A nice place to relax and enjoy the scenery.
Favorite Dish: As I said the weather was hot so we ordered ice cream. Mine was a huge portion of vanilla ice cream with lots of fresh red berry fruit smoothered with thick whipped cream. Kenny had ice cream too - his was chocolate and mint. The restaurant has a varied menu of full meals or snacks and a comprehensive drinks menu too. Talking about drinks - we had iced water flavoured with raspberry - very refreshing when you need to cool down.

Gasthof Bier-Adam is one of these places in the centre of Berchtesgaden, where the local people go, and most of the tourists are just passing by, some of them at least admiring the lovely frescos at the facade of the building.
Get inside and enjoy "Bavarian Gemuetlichkeit" at one of the oldest restaurants in Berchtesgaden : Already in 1546 it is mentioned as a place to drink beer, later you mainly got wine there, because it belonged to the monastery of Berchtesgaden, that had vinyards in Krems and der Donau and in Klosterneuburg (5km from Vienna)
Favorite Dish: Marillenknoedel auf Fruechteroester was my favorite, it was funny to see this typical austrian desert in Bavaria. It even seems to be some sort of a "heritage" of the connection to Krems an der Donau (250 km from Berchtesgaden).Marille is the austrian expression for Aprikose (apricot) and Marillenknoedel are even hard to get in Austria...

Besides Fischerstueberl there is only one other restaurant in St.Bartholomae at Koenigssee, and you may find it inside the old hunting-lodge of the bavarian kings, that was transfered into a restaurant already a long time ago. Inside the building you may take a seat in one of the many seperate rooms or you may sit outside, in the large beer-garden and enjoy the great view of the surrounding mountain-scenery.
Be prepared of some waiting time on a sunny day, when thousands of people came to St.Bartholomae and are hungry...
Favorite Dish: This place is mainly well known for game-dishes, fishes-dishes and of course you may also get the ordinary bavarian kitchen.
I had Rehragout mit Knoedel und Rotkraut (venison-ragout with bread-dumplings and red-cabbage) for 10,80 euros, that is quite a good price for such a portion.
Some other dishes that I saw on the menu, so you have an idea about prices:
Hackbraten mit Zigeunersauce, Kartoffelpüree 7,60
(Hamburgers with bell-peppersauce and mashed potatoes 7,60)
Weisswurst & Bretzel or roll 4,10 euros

Kehlsteinhaus / "Eagle's nest" is a nice restaurant today, 1834 meters above sea-level. It has a terrace offering an excellent view and inside the historical building there are various rooms and halls , that sometimes is called "Hitler's Tea-house", BUT in fact that used to be somewhere else and does not exist anymore nowadays.
Some of the rooms inside of Kehlsteinhaus are still decorated with the original chandeliers, mantle-piece etc. of the 1930s .
This restaurant is open ONLY in summertime !
From Nov. 1st till beginning or mid of May
it will be closed and will be opened again according to the weather-situation!
Favorite Dish: Kehlsteinhaus is a perfect place for small snacks and genuine bavarian kitchen at reasonable prices.

Very nice Gasthof, smack in the centre of Berchtesgaden. Lovely ambience. Great food. Very pleasant staff.
Sometimes gets very busy, so consider a reservation.
There's a "no smoking" area for any one who likes this option.
There ia a very extensive bavarian menu.
Average price for a meal consisting of a main course (complete) with 2 X 1/2 L. of beer and a schnapps to see you back out to the snow in under €20 per person.
With no drink, you can have a substantial meal, again complete, for about €10.
You won't need a desert after a main course here.
Sample (reduced) menu is available on the net site
Favorite Dish: Schweinshaxn mit Semmelkdodel (Crispy roast pork knuckle with bread dumpling).

This is a small, local eatery run by a father and his children.
It is a great place for people on a budget (as I was) in Berchtesgaden. The owner is a very friendly man who makes you feel at home either on the outside of the eatery or inside.
Favorite Dish: The Gyro/Dino is what I always had along with a heife-weiss beer and some french fries.
The cost is right and the portion is generous. You can order a spicy gyro if you want as well.
You can order hot dogs, hamburgers, pastas and pizzas if you like.

This restaurant, the oldest one in Berchtesgaden, is a cosy and welcoming place in the old centre of the town.
The servings are generous, and I recommend to finish the meal with a small glass of Enzian, distilled from gentians.
Favorite Dish: The Rehmedallion (roe medallions) with mushrooms and other vegetables was the most expensive dish on the menu, and also my favourite one. But there were also other dishes that looked very inviting and cost far less, for instance the Knoedelteller, with three kinds of meatballs.
