An excursion to St. Bartholomae is a Must, while on vacation in Berchtesgaden ! This church is for sure one of the most-photographed churches in Bavaria, and you may find its pictures in many books and postcards. Maybe it is because of the scenic place of that church in front of the high mountain-scenery. The first church at this place dated back to the year 1134, in 1698 the lovely towers with the onion-tops were added. St. Bartholomae is the saint for the alpine farmers and shepherds and so this place became a quite popular place for the local farmers. The church looks nice from inside, but not very special, so in case that it is locked, while you are there, you did not miss a lot. The main attraction is in my opinion its lovely white facade with the red onion-towers and the great mountain-scenery behind of it ! There is NO regular church-service in St.Bartholomae !!! Leave a Comment Directions: The pilgrim-church of St.Bartholomae is about 4 km from from Schoenau, at the shore of Koenigssee, the only way to get there is by boat !!!

driveway to the berghof by doug48 located on the obersalzberg plateau are the ruins of hitler's berghof. hitler bought an alpine cabin known as haus wachenfeld in 1928. over the years it had several renovations and in 1938 the berghof was built as the official residence and office for the fuehrer. the berghof served a dual purpose, primarily it was the fuehrer's residence, but it also hosted numerous important meetings. it was at the berghof that hitler met the british prime minister chamberlain and worked out the austrian anschluss, (union). in 1945 the british bombed the obersalzberg and destroyed the berghof and the homes of hermann goring and martin borman. in 1952 the bavarian government blew up the remains of the berghof. an interesting web site to see before and after pictures of the berghof is. www.thirdreichruins.com. Address: salzbergstrasse-hintereckDirections: obersalzberg. from the hintereck parking lot walk down salzbergstrasse past the hotel zum turken. the driveway to the berghof is just past the zum turken on the left.Website: www.thirdreichruins.com

zum turken by doug48 the zum turken hotel dates back to the early 20th century. this hotel catered to alpine hikers and skiers. when hitler built the berghof next door the nazis took over the hotel to house hitler's s.s. body guards. during the 1945 bombing of the obersalzberg the hotel was spared. after the war the hotel was returned to it's owners and it has been in operation ever since. today it is host to tourists visiting the eagles nest and other berchtesgaden attractions. note: this hotel is only open to registered guests. on the parking lot side of the hotel there is an entrance to the obersalzberg tunnels which are open to the public for a small fee. Address: salzbergstrasse-hintereckPhone: 08652 50 67Directions: obersalzberg, next to the hintereck parking lot.

Kehlsteinstrasse - the road to the Eagle's Nest by globetrott, 4 more photos Kehlsteinstrasse is one of the most scenic alpine roads in Europe and it was built within the rather short time of just 13 months. 700 meters is the difference in hight and the road has a length of 6,5 km. There are 5 tunnels and the road is mostly just 4 meters wide. Therefore the time-table of the buses taking the tourists up and down the road are very strict and oncoming buses have to wait at the passing-places. This road was used by A. Hitler only 16 times and that road was public untill 1952. Nowadays that road is for the buses ONLY ! Pedestrians are absolutely forbidden to walk there, there is a seperate walking-path through the woods ! Leave a Comment Directions: Kehlsteinstrasse is the road from Obersalzberg to the parking of Kehlsteinhaus. NO private cars there, just the public buses !

Kehlsteinhaus was a present for A.Hitler by globetrott, 4 more photos Kehlsteinhaus was a present by Martin Bormann on behalf of the NSDAP for Adolf Hitler's 50th birthday. Thousands of workers were working for 13 months for this giant project that included a scenic mountain-road from Obersalzberg to the upper parking, the tunnel into the mountain, the lift up to the Kehlsteinhaus and the house itself. Hitler did use that building only a few times, But Eva Braun spent a lot of days here. While most of the other buildings on Obersalzberg were destroyed, this building remained untouched and it is nowadays owned by the state of Bavaria. The interior is still the same at a few places, it is used as a restaurant today and millions of people go there each year in order to enjoy the great view and also breath a bit of the history of course... Leave a Comment Directions: Kehlsteinhaus is high above Obersalzberg and Berchtesgaden in a hight of 1834 meters above sea-level.

The Kehlsteinhaus - translated into English - Key Stone or re named in English as the Eagle's Nest holds a fascinating - if some what dark insight into the history of Word War ll. The house resembles a swiss chalet was commissioned by Martin Bormann as a gift to Adolf Hitler on the occassion of his 50th. Birthday. Built as a retreat and a place to entertain in September 1939 the house and the amazing road to it were completed in just thirteen months finishing in September 1939 . Although Eva Braun and her sister Gretl along with other high ranking party members and their families spent summer days here, Hitler him self visited only on about ten rare occassions - sometimes for as little as half an hour. Because of his lack of envolvement with the Kehisteinhaus it was saved from demolition at the end of the War. Up until 1960 the Eagle's Nest was used by the Allies as a military command post before being handed back to the state of Bavaria. Today it is not in anyway a memorial or any other tribute to Hitler but a restaurant complex managed by a charitable institution. Strange to think nothing structural has changed here in over sixty years except for the added terrace - one thing has changed here though - the number of visitors is incredible - no one told me the World and his Wife would be here too!!
