Chiemsee Things to Do

  • The Chiemsee lake

The Chiemsee lake has the square about 80 square kilometers and is situated in foothill area of Bavaria Chimgau. That is why it is sometimes named the Bavarian sea. It is located at height of 518 m. Three large islands are available on lake: Herreninsel - man's island, Fraueninsel-female island and Krautinsel - grassy island. Herrenchiemsee has a...

  • Herreninsel

The Herreninsel in the Chiemsee has an area of around 240 hectares and has numerous sights with the Royal Palace, the park and waterworks, the museum and the two galleries in the Augustinian Monastery. It has a palace built by King Ludwig II in 1878, also called Herrenchiemsee, which was never completed but was meant to be a replica of the Palace...

  • Beautiful fountains in the garden

There are unique fountains in the garden in front of the Schloss Herrenchiemsee. King Ludwig II. has ordered the very best artists and technicians for his tremendous buildings and surroundings. Herrenchiemsee was his homage to the French King Louis 14. Herrenchiemsee is a kind of miniature Versailles with for example a famous "Spiegelsaal".

  • Chieming

Chieming is a village at the mainland on the Eastern side of the lake. There is a nice Pizzeria right at the lake and in summer it is very nice to sit there and enjoy the view. In Chieming you have "beaches" for swimming and I have also seen a sailing club there. Notice that car parking has to be paid (short term parking, there are special day...

  • HERRENINSEL - legacy of a crazy monarch

The Herreninsel is 15 minutes by boat from the Fraueninsel or 15 minutes from Prien. The attraction of the island is the castle "Schloß Herrenchiemsee" built by the monarch Ludwig II who wanted to build this castle in reverence to Louis XIV, the Sunking. The castle was meant to look exactly like the one in Versailles, but after 7 years of building...

  • Fraueninsel - retreat at the monastery

The monastery offers seminars and courses on different topics. A good place for a retreat and an encounter with yourself ....Check out the website indicated below for detailed info (I'm afraid there is no English version, only a German one).Note that the monastery cannot be visited as a tourist, but participating in a course will give you the...

Take the horse carriage on ...

There are several horse carriages at the landing of the boat to Herrenchiemsee. It`s nice to ride thru the natural garden. Especially in the summer heat it`s more relaxed than a 20 minute walk. For groups they accept reservations.

    Don`t wear high heels

You might think that I`m joking, but I`m not. I have seen some ladies entering the boat and the island with extremly high heels shoes, complaining about the uncomfortable pathes. It`s a relaxing, sporty area and no catwalk :-)
