Speaking English

It would seem at first impression that the people of Coburg hardly speak a word of English, but this is not so. You discover this when you talk with a Coburger after they have had a few too many beers, because all of a sudden their inhibition goes, and they feel confident enough to use their less than perfect, but perfectly acceptable English. Generally, the only time you will find a Coburger who will speak English with you, is if their English is so good you can barely distinguish it from a native speaker. I'm not sure if this derives from shyness, perfectionism, or something else, but it is very strange. So, do the Coburgers a favour, and coax them out of this habit by complimenting them on their excellent English every time they make the effort.

On a related issue, English isn't commonly heard in these parts, due to it being mostly off the tourist path of everyone but Germans. I found that people were sometimes staring at me as I walked through the town, and I soon realised it was only when I walked with my English speaking friends and talked to them. The sound of an alien language seems to be quite unusual here, and results in an inquisitive response. It's nothing but curiosity, though, so don't take offense, just take pleasure in being the centre of attention!
