The streets of Coburg are very safe.

The people of Coburg are very law abiding, and I never once felt threatened anywhere in the town, even walking through the park in the early hours of the morning. I would be hard pressed to think of a place of similar size that I have felt as safe in. The police of Bavaria have a reputation for being a bit over the top and officious, and our experience with them at the Crytek offices when the Nuremberg state troopers broke down our doors was good evidence of this, but that didn't seem to be the case with the Coburger police. I even met the chief of police, and he was so polite I couldn't believe he was such an important man. I even saw people jaywalking in Coburg right in front of a police car, and they didn't do anything. My sister got fined for doing this in Tubingen, even though it was her first day in Germany ever, and she didn't know it was against the law.

Coburg is so uneventful, that the emergency services here seem to overreact to any trouble, but not in a nasty way. I was walking through town one day and saw what must have been every fire engine, police car and ambulance in the town all pass by with sirens blaring, but there was no smoke and no mention of anything in the news the following day, so I could only assume they were responding to some old lady having a cat stuck in a tree. One night someone shouted very loudly outside my hotel, and within a few minutes a police car arrived with a loudspeaker, and instructed everyone to behave themselves. It was 4am!!!

The people are so well behaved, I don't think I've even seen a single piece of litter on the streets in a month of being here.
