Favorite thing: I was only shortly in Dießen, to visit the church and the tin cafè, and somehow I didn’t made it to go back during my summer trip in 2013. But that was a shame because the whole town is marvellous according to the photos I saw and the glances I could see when I was driving towards the church. And then there is also the viewpoint high above town and lake which I passed 2 years ago – a most amazing view of the lake, but unfortunately there was no way to pull over the car for a photo.

Dießen is famous for its pottery. Hence the town celebrates this with a huge Ceramic Market, where more than 100 potters from Europe flock here to show and sell their products. This market is held each year from Ascension Day until the following Sunday (May 9 – 12 in 2013, May 29 – June 1 in 2014).

Dießen is called Markt Dießen, or market town. This indicates that the town received the right to “hold markets” already in medieval times. It proudly shows this, still – for example on the manholes – see photo.

The website of Dießen gives a nice overview of the town and the attractions. The tourist office is located near the train station.
    Opening hours, tourist office:
    November – February: Mon, Wed, Fri: 10:00 – 12:00,
    March – April: Mon – Fri: 09:30 – 12:30,
    Mai – October: Mon – Fri: 09:30 – 12:30 and 15:30 – 18:00 and Sat 09:30 – 12:30

Museum dedicated to the master of Carmina Burana

by Trekki Updated Aug 5, 2013

Favorite thing: Famous German composer Carl Orff lived in Dießen almost 30 years and so it is not surprising that the town has set up a museum dedicated to his work and music. Unfortunately it is open only on weekends, so I must leave it for my next time.

However, the region around Ammersee (Lake Ammer) has not only established the museum in his honour. During summer (June to July) Carl-Orff Festival is being held in Florian Stadl (a barn) of nearby Andechs Monastery since 1998. The monastery was chosen, because the master is buried there. On the festival’s website it is mentioned that Carl Orff himself wanted this, “to show people where he was at home”.
When I was in this part of Bavaria in June/July 2013, I saw the posters about the event and tried to get tickets for the Carmina Burana Soirees, but of course everything was already fully booked. The prices were even quite acceptable, ranging from 10 Euro to 60 Euro.
For those who are interested in listening to one or more of Carl Orff’s work: for the 2014 season the program will be announced in March 2014. This is also when the ticket sales will start.

Opening hours of Carl Orff Museum in Dießen:
    Saturday and Sunday: 14:00 – 17:00.
    Entrance fees: 2 Euro.
