Ebrach Abbey Herb/Vegetable garden

Across the road from the Abbey, is another garden.
I happened to notice a flight of step's, and what looked to be another Fountain. Climbing the flight of steps, I came to a nicely laid out Rose garden.
I believe the area beneath the garden where you see the window's in my photo, was a cellar or brewing area.
Also, if you need a Toilet, then they are along the wall, you enter and go downstairs.

The Herb/Vegetable Garden is tucked in behind the Church and the Abbey. It is nicely laid out and cared for.

Fountain of Hercules

I walked along a side street, and found on one side, The Abbey, and on the other side, the Abbey garden's.
There were so Rose's in flower, and quite a large fountain which wasn't in operation.
The Fountain is of Hercules Wrestling with Antaeus in the garden of the Ebrach Monastery.

Ebrach Abbey Church

First of all, don't be fooled by the outside of this Church!

The original Church built here in 1134 has long gone, but the Church that followed in 1200, is considered one of Germany’s most important buildings of early Gothic architecture.

Do open the door and go inside as I did, as you will see one of the most beautiful Abbey Churches you could ever see!

When I opened the door and walked inside, I saw this Church was different to any other's I had previously seen. I really liked the colour of lemon and deep yellow that it was painted inside, and the ceiling pattern's, all I saw, I liked!

In 1200, Abbot Hermann began building the Church and finished it in 1280. It is 86 m long, has more than 50 windows, 26 altars and, above the portal, a rose window. The windows were newly painted in 1887.
The organ, with its 36 stops, is believed to be a masterpiece of workmanship.

The Church was being restored, and I believe it has been this way for many year's. It didn't matter, as the main part was free of renovation, and it was here I saw the most famous feature, the giant wheel-shaped stained-glass window on its western wall, known as the Rose window.

There are the 27 Baroque & Rococo Altar's that were built in the 17th & 18th centuries to look at! Lovely Rococo ironwork gate's, a Renaissance altarpiece depicting the Vision of St Bernard and the Baroque organ can be seen.

If you are in the area, do make a detour, as this Church is a MUST SEE!

To see the inside of the beautiful Cistercian Monastery in Erbach, it is best to have a group to visit.
You can visit on your own, but then the fee is 50 euro.....
See below for more details.

The abbey is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Nicholas.
It was founded in 1126 or 1127 by Conrad III of Germany and his consort Gertrude, and settled by 12 monks from Morimond Abbey in Burgundy, under the first abbot, Adam of Ebrach.

Interesting reading that the Bishops of Wurzburg.......

Had their hearts brought to the monastery in Ebrach (entrails to the chapel of the Marienburg, bodies to the St. Kilian cathedral).
About 30 hearts of bishops, some of which had been desecrated during the German Peasants' War, are said to have found their final resting place at Ebrach.

OPEN.... April - November, guided tours daily at 10.30am and 2.30pm

ADMISSION....
THE GUIDED TOUR FOR A GROUP OF AT LEAST 10 PEOPLE IS.....5 EURO PER PERSON

GROUP'S UP TO 10 PEOPLE HAVE TO PAY THE ALL INCLUSIVE PRICE OF 50 EURO

The tour shows you the church, the staircases, the emperor's hall as well as the museum telling more about the history of Ebrach.
The guided tour takes about 1.5 hours.
