by Ossi.P You should make a trip to the nearby 'Fränkische Schweiz' It's a beautiful hillcountry with old castles (also ruins) and beautiful villages. It is a good region to do some hiking (e.g. to one of the castle ruins) and to get good and cheap Franconian food in a rural restaurant. You just have to pay attention that you don't enter one of those 'tourist temples'. More info: www.fraenkische-schweiz.com Leave a Comment Address: It's located in the Northeast of Erlangen!

by a_manisa I strongly recommend you to visit 'Kulisse' restaurant-bar every evening and say hello to Jürgen- the owner and chef. You can recognize him easily from his characteristic moustache. The photo was taken sitting in the 'Kulisse' and viewing his neighbour- 'theatre cafe'. This cafe is run by a talented Turkish poet (Habib Bektaþ)- my fellow country man. You may taste some Anatolian food there and have the opportunity to chat with him. For his published works refer to the 'Cultural Tips' section. A lonely traveller will find all the best souls of the town, cold beer and good food here- in these two bars. Leave a Comment Address: Theatre Str. near Theatre Platz.

by Ossi.P Visit the city of Bamberg for a day!!! Bamberg is a very old city with a wonderful medieval center. And due ti its small size, in contrary to e.g. Nuremberg, nothing had been destroyed during WW2! Bamberg is also one of the most important catholic sites in Germany. It is famous for its amount of churches, including the Heinrichscathedral, built in 1012. Bamberg is also famous for its unique ols bars and restaurants, where you can get Bamberg's speciality: smoked-beer (Rauchbier)! It's really an experience! Leave a Comment Directions: Bamberg is about 40 km north of Erlangen! You get there by train or by car (via A 73).Other Contact: For further information visit:

Before exploring the town, make sure you understand a little bit about Erlangen's history. Once you understand how the city came into being, the castle and churches will have a lot more meaning for you. Peaceful university town with a wonderful Fußgängerzone (pedestrian zone). Many, many relaxing cafes.

Forget about battling the crowds at Oktoberfest, Erlangen's fest (in late May/early June) is one of the best in all of Bavaria. Just outside the beautiful city center, up a hill and in the woods the fest is held. There are tons of great breweries represented, and you do not have to wait in line for hours to get a beer. Also, native Germans go to this fest, so you can actually experience a real German beer fest, with lots of bratwursts, lederhosen, and German music and dancing. Leave a Comment

In August I believe, the beerfest is actually one of the biggest one in Bavaria, of course next the massive Oktoberfest, but it is better in one or two ways. For example, the beer is cheaper there (7 euros a mas (liter)), and it is easier to obtain a table. Actually the signature of Erlangen is having just a simple planck with only enough space for one mass, instead of a large table. gotta love the germans. The best part about Erlangen beerfest is it is located up on the great hill of erlangen, covered with a fantastic canopy of german trees! this whole festival is outdoors! there are tents for the infamous rainey german summers, but the whole time the festival is in the light forest and on inclined ground, so it is really charming, but challenging at the end of the night. It still has all the nice things of oktoberfest, like carnival rides, lots of games, food stands, rock banks playing music, and LOTS OF PPL. It was very congested. But you what they say: After a few drinks its easier to speak a second language. I met germans from all over the place at beerfests like no other. And they loved Canadians! It was great, and they were very friendly. Later in the night, ppl begin to dance on the tables, which is really fun! just watch out for the glasses breaking and stuff. lol. the atmosphere is very happy, 'the summer of 69!"" lol At night or during the day, theres always music and beer flowing. You should see the traditional leather pants on the men, eat Bratwurst and other traditonal park food, and see the German instead of tourists like at oktoberfest enjoying in the most time-honoured german tradition: Bier trinken! Try the Wheat Bier (Weissbier), or of course Erlangen's own locally brewed beer: Kitzmen Bier i believe it is. no wine drinkers here. The live music and beer just puts a smile on everyones face, and theyre all happy to be alive, and living in the moment. Laughing, flirting, playing games, smiling with friends, Thats what lifes about! TIP: With all the beveragesg abound, expect long lineups in the so called 'pisseur' (german or ***....errr), and even longer and more tedious disgruntled lineups for the ladies. Leave a Comment

The Sunday's are very pleasant to take a stroll through the expensive tree-lined and cobblestone Nurembergstrasse where H&M and the Galeriakaufhof is located, and then continue past Town hall and find back to back to back Turkish Donor Shops, where you may have lunch or better yet, smoke some traditional turkish Shisha smoke pipe. Around here is also many great Irish bars and pubs, such as Papa Joes and many others with student discounts on drinks. Then spend the last bits of daylight in the wonderful city park which is near the great church bell and train station, where students can relax on the grass. All in all, Erlangen is a student town which boasts a great variety of shopping possibilities. Just in 2007, a modern north american style shopping mall with two stories, a food court and name brand shops opened which is very very nice. Erlangen also has great traditional small room german restaurants, where you can have a classy german experience. And then during christmas time the christmas market is not to be missed with the Gluhwein. TIP: For an english safe haven in a mad german world, head over to one of the English pubs (forget the name), where you can watch rugby and soccer. Leave a Comment
