The Bavarian forest (Bayrischer Wald) is the largest forest in Europe. Outdoor activities include hiking, mountain biking, boating, skiing, while the towns and villages provide the visitor with an authentic view of traditional Bavarian culture. This part of Germany contains practically no tourist-traps, and foreign visitors are few. Fluent English speakers are much rarer here than in the big cities, and even if you speak German you may have a little trouble with the local dialect (as I did); however, this part of Germany is a great alternative to the well-trodden tourist destinations like the Romantic Road or the Black Forest.
