  • This is the main reason why anyone comes to Fussen. At least the first time. This is the castle that Disney used as a model for the one at DW. There are tours in English and German at least of the 16 completed rooms here. I dont believe they allowes pics during the tour but could be wrong.

  • Schloss Neuschwanstein - Fussen
    Schloss Neuschwanstein
    by asianbelle
I heard from someone that Sleeping Beauty's castle in Disneyland was patterned after Schloss Neuschwanstein. So, instead of heading to the replica, better go and see the original.

Locally known as "mad" King Ludwig II's castle, Neuschwanstein is nestled in the mountain. Whew! I could just imagine Ludwig surveying his surroundings and his constituents.

My favorite room in the castle is Ludwig's own bathroom. The guide told us that, while soaking in the tub, Ludwig likes to gaze at the stars. But, glass roof is yet to be invented then, so he simulated the black sky and the bright stars through lighted candles enveloped in black curtains.

Well, maybe, Ludwig is not a "mad" King, but a King with a vision, a man ahead of his time.

  • Directions: From Fussen train station, take a bus going to the castle. However, the bus station is actually at the foot of the mountain where the castle is located. Hence, you need to hike or ride a horse drawn carriage to finally reach the castle.

  • Schloss Hohenschwangau - Fussen
    Schloss Hohenschwangau
    by asianbelle
Schloss Hohenschwangau is the older of the 2 castles. One could say it is the ancestral castle, since King Ludwig's parents lived there. It is known for the figure of a dove on top of one of its towers.

Going up, we took the fastest (but "steepest") path in our excitement and haste to see the inside of the castle. Midway, there is a couple of benches where you can rest and marvel in the beauty below you. Going down, we took the path designed for a more leisurely pace which was a wise decision as it led us toward the lake.

One of my favourite scenes -
    top of Reichenstrasse

If there's one place that you'll be visiting while you're in Fussen it's the Reichenstrasse, a lovely cobbled mall that runs off the main traffic road to Austria, or Switzerland, or wherever you want to go south.
Reichenstrasse is supported by the bands of tourists that forage among the shops, giving a deservedly prosperous air to this delightful village.
You can see Lueftlmalerein (the frescoes on the outside of buildings, common in Bavaria) as shown in pic 2 on the chemist shop, or dive into one of the many cafes and sate one of your other senses.
I found myself attracted to this street time and again, such was its lure. It also has the advantage that all the other interesting streets either run off it or aren't far away, leading to other attractions that can be seen above the rooftops as shown in the opening pic.

  • Hohenschwangau Castle from neuschwanstein - Fussen
    Hohenschwangau Castle from
    neuschwanstein

Neuschwanstein Castle is easy to get to from Fussen. The public bus departs from across the street from the train station at least every hour and drops you off at the tourism office in the town of Hohenschwangau which is where the castle is.
A round trip ticket cost 3.40euros per person. There is also a walking trail just off the main road which is about 3km long.
You can only visit the inside of the castle on a guided tour. You purchase tickets for the tour just up the street from where the bus drops you off (it opens at 8am).
Once you have your ticket, you have to get up the hill to the castle. You can walk, take the bus or a horse drawn carriage. You have to wait inside the courtyard until the time on your ticket is displayed, then you can go through the turnstile and up the stairs to the first floor where your tour will start.
The first tour of the day is at 9am, and I highly recommend arriving as early as possible to avoid the large groups who like to sleep late. Our tour was at 915am and there were only 6 people on it!
After the castle tour (about 35min) you can go onto the Marienbrucken (Mary's Bridge) which offers a nice view of the castle. You can also visit the waterfall below by going downstairs. If you cross the Mary's Bridge, you can follow that winding path up the hill to the look off. There are no railings, so you must be extremely careful! There is even a marker for a person who fell off the cliff as reminder of the danger. The trail branches part way up, but goes nowhere in particular. It stops at a log across the path, but is a nice hike if you like hikes.
A bathroom tip: bathrooms in and around the castle are clean and free. In Hohenschwangau, they are crowded and cost about 40cents. Go when you can!

    West end of castle.

There is much climbing to the upper floors where the rooms are finished in exquisite materials and woods. Very definitely master craftsmen were emloyed on the construction and finishing of the rooms.

If I recall no photos are allowed inside, but one can take vies from the windows.

if the opportunity arises take the view to the south, to the mountains a nd a ravine crossed by a slender bridge. later visit that bridge and cross it and climb the hill to the east.

Do not be surprised to see a sign telling of an ardent Photographer who wanted the ultimate photo, who suddenly slipped to his death down the cliff side.

    Pure silk walls...

    From my emails:
"The tours of the palace were only in German (they have to have a minimum of 15 for a specific guide) but they do have excellent and easy to read sheets and you just tack on to the back of a tour.
Of course, doing this tempts one to transgress even further. With cameras not allowed (though they used to be), mine somehow fell out of its bag and went off..............several times in fact! I must get that bag seen to.
The exterior's classical excellence is only exceeded by the baroque and rococo-gone-mad interior. It has been compared to the Palace of Versailles, and Ludwig was a huge admirer of Louis XV, but this is only about one hundredth the size.
In the quality stakes however, it certainly loses nothing. Not since the Palacio Real in Madrid have I been as impressed with a room as I was here.
The master bedroom and the dining room (with a still working lift that lowers the dining table beneath the floor so it's out of sight) are masterpieces of design and the effect when all the candles are lit and reflected in the massive mirrors of the dining room is something you can't begin to imagine.
There are only 8 rooms, the main four forming the points of a cross, while the corner rooms are called closets. Mind you, with walls of pure silk, stunningly framed portraits adorning them and the rococo rolls everywhere, they bore little resemblance to any closet I have ever seen."
In picture 5 you can glean some idea of the rococo-gone-mad interior. For mine, at times, it bordered on overkill but was nonetheless amazing for that.

  • The impressive Temple of Venus - Fussen
    The impressive Temple of Venus
    by iandsmith, 4 more photos
I'll quote here from my emails:
"Linderhof, the only one of mad Ludwig's castle to actually be completed, beckoned me. Though it involved a circuitous bus route (2 and half hours and three buses each way), I deemed it appropriate that I choose this.
Why I deemed it appropriate was that my legs told me "Five hours on a bus sitting down sounds great". How could I deny them?
So at 9.35 I boarded the Mercedes, they of the suspension that sinks when the doors open to allow easier ingress and egress. The Germans would engineer something like that, despite what those who favour a certain French marque might have you believe, though others have since followed.
We rolled along the flat terrain, the Alps constantly at our side until we reached Oberammergau. On the final bus we then bisected the mountains and, though it was nice, it didn't quite have the drama of, say, the Dolomites or Berchtesgaden.
We arrived at Linderhof carpark and I immediately couldn't help but notice the stark contrast between this and Neuschwanstein. While one is a standout in an epic setting, the other seeks to bury itself between a forested hill and a forested mountain. Its seclusion so at odds with its more famous cousin.
On the small hill sits the small but very impressive Temple of Venus. Between that and the palace, in spring and summer, is a vibrant and colourful fountain and garden, neither of which was on show during my visit."

The first thing that I really noticed was Linderhof's size. It really isn't that large, palace-wise. This was obviously a place to go for the weekend as the gardens are as much of a feature as the palace itself.
It was completed in 1878 and its richly ornamented facade does not bely what's on the inside.
For mine, picture 5 best sums up just how much detail there is.

For this journey you get two for the price of one. Amazingly, two castles sit side by side on the same hilltop almost within a stone's throw of each other. Mind you, you'd want a pretty good arm!
The first one I walked into was Hohen-Freyberg, these days the lesser of the two ruins in terms of remains but still interesting and with splendid views over the Allgau region.
