Neuchswanstein.....what can I say....it was fabulous (though you can only see it on a guided tour, and because it's so busy, you are moved along rather quickly, through only a limited number of rooms).

This is where the story gets interesting. This castle was built by the third kaiser of Germany which is separated from the first Kaiser by a year, since the second one only reigned for 99 days before he died of cancer. The problem is, that this castle is huge and its owner was crazy, Kaiser Wilhelm III. He wanted a castle more extravagant than his father's, so he made it higher and absolutely huge. In fact it had 19 bedrooms and slew of other useless things. In fact, for a time they had to stop building it because they ran out of money. The Kaiser had made the German treasurey broke building it. For this and many other reasons involving world politics, he was considered absolutely nuts, literally. This was the last Monarchy of the modern state of Germany. As Germany was brought into WWI.

The most fantastic castle in the world I have ever seen. We have to give thanks to King Ludwig II. Many people say he is a mad king but I think he is a genious and talented. It's just breath taking when I went inside and see those magnificant art and crafted.

Hohenshwangau Castle: It's next door to Neuschwanstein, which receives far more tourist traffic. Hohenschwangau is far older, and of more importance to the Bavarian monarchy. I didn't have a chance to tour Hohenschwangau, but next time I'm in the area I will.

This is the most photographed castle in the world, as you've probably noticed. The interior is worth the tour, since you get to see many of the clever design schemes (secret doors, a balcony made to look like the side of cliff, etc). Neuschwanstein is pictured above.

The best way to see the castle and learn the history of King Ludwig. The guide Brad is amazing, informative and witty. His commentary was far more interesting than the castle itself.

Give yourself an afternoon to cycle around Fussen and maybe Weissensee, which I did. The road signs are clear...you cannot get lost. The scenery is too good to be missed.
