Are the Bavarians Germans?

by Gili_S

Often Bavarians see themselves Bavarian first and then only as Germans. In other regions of Germany, they do not see the Bavarians as Germans at all. Here are few useful links for Bavaria:Tourism official:www.bayern.byBayern official:www.bayern.de

Some history

by Henkster

Historically and politically , Bavaria has always occupied a special position within Germany. Although a wealthy duchy within the Holy Roman Empire, its rulers preferred artistic patronage to the territorial expansionism and dynastic feuding characteristic of the rest of the nation. A fundamental change in Bavaria's status occurred at the beginning of the nineteenth century, when it profited from Napoleon's decision to re-order the map of Germany: it was doubled in size, and promoted to the rank of a kingdom. Thereafter, it retained much of its independence and its own monarch, even after the union of Germany in 1871. Following the demise of the monarchy at the end of World War I, Bavaria briefly became a free state, but quickly degenerated into a hotbed of right-wing extremism where Hitler had his first successes. This reputation for reactionary politics continues to the present day:...

History

by Leipzig

The Roman Empire conquered the Celt region in 15 BC. In 6th century a German tribe called Baiuoarii invaded this region and gave their name. St. Boniface completed the Christianization in the 8th century. In 788 Charlemagne added Bavaria to his empire. Emperor Otto I stopped the Magyar invasion in 955 and gave Bavaria his brother Henry. As Bavaria had been centre of rebellion against the imperial authority, Otto II took away all duchy but Upper Bavaria, Lower Bavaria and Tyrol. From 1180 to 19180 the Wittelsbach ruled Bavaria. Over the years Bavaria became an important and powerful territory that was the reason why it was overrun by foreign armies several times. Elector Maximilian IV Joseph, who in 1799 united all Wittelsbach lands, allied himself with Napoleon I, joined the Confederation of the Rhine, and in 1806 was proclaimed king of Bavaria as Maximilian I. In 1813 Maximilian...

How did Alois Hingerl become angel ALOISIUS ???

by globetrott

Alois Hingerl - Dienstmann Nr. 172 , aka "Aloisius" is one of the most popular caracters created by Ludwig Thoma.Alois Hingerl was working as an outporter (I found this word for Dienstmann in my dictionary, but it sounds strange to me) at the trainstation in Munich and died during his duty.He came to heaven and was not able to adapt to the "strange customs" of the angels singing Hallelujah all day long.He started to shout at St.Peter and God, and so they had the idea to send him down to Munich again for 1 day every week , in order to take some letters with "advices from heaven" for the governement of Bavaria. So angel Aloisius flew down to the townhall, took down his wings and thought, why not having a beer in Hofbräuhaus before delivering the letter...In Hofbräuhaus he had one beer after the other, and could not stop it, but finally forgot the letter for the governement...Aloisius is...

Schäffler - an important guild in Bavaria

by globetrott

"Schäffler" is the professional, making wooden vats and similar things.Of course a region like Bavaria needed a lot of them for their beer-poduction, that way Schäffler became rich and wealthy.Today you may still see them performing their well-known "Schäffler-tanz" :Normally it is a group of several people in their traditional costumes dancing with a garland, like to be seen on my picture. Also on the rathaus / townhall in Munich you will see some "Schäffler" performing their dances with the Glockenspiel / chimes.Schäfflerstrasse in Munich - where I took this pic - is halfway from Marienplatz to Odeonsplatz

Charivari

by globetrott

Charivari is a word often used in Bavaria ( today mostly as the name of a radio-station )But mainly "Charivari" is all these small things hanging on a traditional hat or lederhosn, on a chain around the neck or arm, that male and female Bavarians wear with their traditional costumes. And it could be any kind of a "hunting-souvenir" like the tooth of an animal, horns of a wolpertinger ;-), Edelweiss prepared and conservated behind glass etc. When you click on my picture, you may see the plenty of "Charivari" this Bavarian has fixed to his tradtional hat.

WOLPERTINGER - rare animals & very shy

by globetrott

A very rare kind of animal is sometimes shown in a museum, or the dead body of it was prepared and is offered in a souvenirshop :This rare animal is called WOLPERTINGER ! So far NOBODY ever saw it ALIVE, but sometimes hunters find the dead bodies of these clever and shy animals, they prepare it and sell it to the shops. It is also rather strange, they all look different, almost no-one is alike another...For infos, pics and prices, please have a look on my links :Wolpertinger for saleWolpertinger-GalerieOn my pic, you may see the Bavarian Lion in Lederhosen......I am working hard to get a pic of a wolpertinger for VT as soon as possible !!

Bavarians often hide their charms behind a grim face......like Ringo - he is the assistant to the man handling the goulliotine of "Schichtl" All persons performing at "Schichtl", have a real job as well and use their vacation for this great spectacle.I remember almost all of these faces coming back every year to Oktoberfest and really working hard from around 09.00 a.m. till 11.00 p.m.
