Climb up Bavaria and see through her eyes

by globetrott

On top of Theresienwiese you will see a statue of Bavaria with a lion sitting next to her.You may climb up inside this 18 meters high statue and have a look out through her eyes. 1560 tons of iron - won from melted cannons from former sea-battleships - were used to build this sculpture 1843-1850.The whole sculpture consists of 6 pieces set togeather .Only a limited number of persons is allowed to enter the sculpture, when they are down again, the next group may walk up.During Oktoberfest there will be a long line of people waiting...

The biggest 4-cylindre in the whole world

by globetrott

The headquarters of BMW were built like a 4-cylindre-engine. Just opposite of the Olympic park you will see the large fabrication-halls of BMW and also a museum of cars in another small building in front of the 4-cylindre.That museum is a Must for all fans of old automobiles. BMW stands for "Bayerische Motoren Werke" - even although all diesel-engines for BMW are built in Steyr / Austria...;-))

"Auf geht's beim Schichtl"

by globetrott

"Auf geht's beim Schichtl" is an expression, you might hear sometimes in Bavaria. It means "Lets go now, lets start..." THIS is where the expression comes from :"Schichtl" is an old traditional "illusion-theatre" shown on Oktoberfest since more than 100 years. A few years ago the gentleman in front with the lederhosn took over Schichtl and since then it is MY favorite place to go and watch mainly ( I have to admit it ) the show that is made in order to get people into the tent.I also saw the show several times, but somehow the pre-show is the best, and you certainly should not miss it, even if you do not know enough German ( and Bavarian ) to understand the great jokes and humor.INSIDE they will use their gouillotine with one of the customers, and it really looks frightening ( but so far everybody survived it )Outside they say : For just 3 € we take off the whole head of a person, for...

Walter Sedelmayer

by globetrott

Walter Sedelmayer was playing the "typical Bavarian" in many TV-plays, he was working for TV and Radio, and he had a very special voice, everybody would recognize immediately. He was able to say a simple word like yes or No in so many different intonations, and his face would also have so plenty of different expressions at the same time...Walter Sedelmayer was killed some years ago under really bad circumstances THIS small poster I saw recently in a window of the restaurant "Zum Sedlmayer" in Munich. It was part of a series of commercials he had for a brewery :He is asking his dog, bringing the hat already : " May I take another beer ??

the silence of the beers....

by richiecdisc

Aside from obvious places like Munich and Bamberg, the best thing to see are the small villages. They are timeless gems and life here has not changed all that much since the turn of the century. Eltmann was one such town and the Gasthof Lammbrau at Markplatz 11 is a classic village pub with a great dunkles beer. It's 19 kilometers northwest of Bamberg in the Steigerwald region of Franconia. This was the 13th brewpub in four days, not the last of the trip, and not even the last of the day. It was understandable that Doreen didn’t want to go in with me. We had sorted out which places were suitable for her to enter and which were best for me to “research” on my own. In the former category were those with some kind of food on offer, and ones where perhaps another woman might be present. The latter ones were strictly one-room boozers, set up for men to let off steam after work and maybe play...

Bavarian architecture

by Henkster

The Bavarian architecture is unique. The houses are mainly made of wood, with lots of flowers and many are painted (Lüftelmalerei), especially in southern Bavaria. Together with the many lakes and the mountains, this is a unique landscape.

One of the best things about this area of Germany is not just the people, the food and the beer but the mountains. Everyday you get a little different view of the peaks and valleys with every movement of the sun and clouds.

The fairy tale castles

by Henkster

King Ludwig II. was born in Nymphenburg palace in Munich. He left the city, because he preferred to be alone and away from people. So he started to built some of the most incredible castles and palaces in the world - in the Bavarian mountains. The most famous one is Neuschwanstein. The other ones are Linderhof (close to Garmisch-Partenkirchen), Herrenchiemsee (built on an island in Chiemsee Lake, being a copy of the Versailles palace) and various other small palaces. The "Crazy King" was found dead in Lake Starnberg, the cause of his death is still a mystery.

Sit some time and listen

by TinKan

Like I say on all of the pages here.... Keep your eyes, ears and heart open. There is so much you will miss if you just look for all the tourist traps and never just stop and look to see what is around you.Sit some time and listen... Listen to what the world is saying to you. On this last trip a friend of mind heard a cokoo bird for the first time. She did not know there was such a bird and that they made such a sound.
