Grainau Travel Guide

I highly recommend different modes of transportation to/from the summit. Take the cogwheel train from Grainau to the Sonn Alpin station at 2600m and then a short cable car ride to the summit. Then on the way down take the cable car down to the Eibsee. It's a short 3 minute walk back to the train station - or do it in the reverse order.

While it may be really hot down in Grainau, bring a long pair of pants and a jacket with you. While I didn't need them (growing up in Northern Michigan makes you immune to cold), I notice a lot of people with jackets and long pants....It was 35C at the base, and I would estimate it was about 18C at the summit.

When arriving at the Sonn Alpin station, which is the endpoint of the cogwheel train, wander off and find a secluded spot to do some deep thinking or to just enjoy the scenery.

Drifting silently, effortlessly, above the Zugspitze - a glider is a fantastic way to see the peak... I watched this glider do circles above the peak and was very jealous
