Königssee Things to Do

  • SIGHTS ON THE CRUISE - 4

Leaving St. Bartholoma behind, we head to our final destination which is Salet. It is here that the boat fills with hikers and campers that have done the trek to Lake Obersee. If you get off here and go for the walk, you will see Germany's highest waterfall, the Rothbachfall. Our Boat is completely full now, so our return journey begins, a quiet...

  • SIGHTS ON THE CRUISE - 2

As we depart from the Harbour, our Host introduces himself and proceeds to give us a running commentary of the sights.1st is on our right, a cliff named the Falkensteiner Wand. Sadly, 70 people were drowned here in a storm in the year 1688, now a small red cross marks the spot. A little further on, and we have a good view of St. Bartholoma which is...

  • SIGHTS ON THE CRUISE - 3

We make our 1st stop at St. Bartholoma, and unfortunately, our lovely sunny day has quickly turned into a grey, wet one. No good photo's for me! The Chapel and attached house are from the 17th century.Bavarian Kings used it as their hunting Castle, but now it is a Restaurant serving traditional food. The Beer garden would be nice on a fine day.

The park was huge, and still fairly full, even late after-noon. Remember, this is park & pay, so you have to go and find the machine, buy your ticket, and put in on display in your window. This...

Königssee Warnings and Dangers

  • SHOPPING

We walked to Lake Konigssee through a street lined with shops aimed at the tourist. We wanted to do the Cruise, so I said I would have a look on the way back. We arrived back at 5pm, and found all of the shops closed, so if you are going to do a late afternoon cruise, and want to do some shopping, do it 1st!

  • WEATHER ON LAKE KONIGSSEE

Weather on Lake Konigssee can change very quickly. When our cruise began, it was a lovely, fine & sunny day. By the time we reached St. Bartholoma, it was raining. We saw it coming over the Mountains and down to the Lake area. When we reached Salet, it was teaming, and as we headed back, we were in the midst of a storm. The lake was grey and had...

  • Eiskapelle (Ice Chapel)

The Ice Chapel is about 3 or 4 km from St Bartholoma. You follow the trail from the National Park Information Hut to Kapelle St Johann und Paul. Having gone past the Chapel you continue uphill through the woods until you reach the large avalanche snow field at the foot of the Watzmann's east wall. The ice chapel changes from year to year in shape...

  • Obersee

If you travel by boat to the far end of Konigssee and get off at Salet, it is about a 10 minute walk to the Obersee. The lake here is surrounded by mountains making the surface normally completely still. It is a photographer’s paradise making for some wonderful reflection shots. During the Nazi era Eva Braun use to swim in the lake and Hitler made...

  • The Röthbach Waterfall

The Röthbach Waterfall can be reached via a boat trip across the Konigssee and getting off at the end of the journey at Salet.
