Signposted walks through Memmingen
Memmingen is a town that you can well explorer by foot. There are two signposted walks through the town, called “Grüner Weg” (green path) and “Roter Weg” (red path). The green path passes parks, gateways, towers and battlements, while the red path will show you architectural and historical sights. There are many information plates with a map and details about the sights. And for children, you even find a little quiz on it. The text on these plates is in German, English, French and Italian.
Getting from Memmingen to Munich we used the train. Due to Oktoberfest we had to buy first class tickets in order to reserve a seat for us, which was a very good thing we did else we would have had to stand all the way as the train was fully booked. The cost for three adults came to 141.00 euro which included the reservation costs.
We used Ryanair to fly to Dublin and back to Munich again. It worked out the cheapest for us and it really was nice to see Memmingen which we otherwise would not have visited. Memmingen airport used to be an army base and the town is approx 1 hour 20 minutes from Munich by train.
We used the train to get to Memmingen from Munich and back again. I really enjoyed the ride as we do not really use trains in South Africa. I would just suggest that you try and book your tickets online as you save a lot of money that way. We did not do it for the trip back to Munich and due to the Oktoberfest we had to travel first class and our tickets were rather expensive.
A recent addition to the Ryanair (also spotted Air Berlin and Wizz arrivals) destination list and advertised sometimes as "Munich west," a train or bus journey of around 1.5 hours, still seem to remember that FJS airport in Munich is the best part of an hour from the city.
Anyway, a regular bus service into Memmingen takes just a few minutes and stops at the rail station, see website for uptodate info.
We flew with Ryanair to Ireland from Memmingen and then back again using Memmingen airport. A nice small airport close to the city.
Easy access to Munich and Ulm as well as south to Oberstdorf and across to Lindau. Don't forget to check the Bayern ticket if you're travelling anything but a short distance, great value.
