There was a Volksfest (Folk Festival) when we were in town and generally speaking, there is a strong traditional bent to Mittenwald. We noticed people outside the church on Sunday, most of whom where wearing Trachten or traditional clothing from the area. The parade leading to the Volksfest featured a band wearing similar clothing. This was followed by traditional music and foods in the local park where of course the local beer was served as well. It was nice to see it was the brewery's Märzen, a rich amber beer traditionally served at such gatherings.

Watch out for this trafic-sign in Mittenwald and other parts of Bavaria ! Have you ever taken a closer look at the trafic-sign "attention: children crossing the street" ?
This is a typical "Bavarian type" of that sign: the girl exactely knows where to go, while the boy has to follow, and he does not really look very happy. The girl has fixed her hair in a style that even would make Papa Ratzi happy, I am sure...
Take a look at that same sign in other parts of the world: mostly its a large boy on the left and a small girl with a satchel on her back on the right, but Bavaria is different...
I also saw that type of sign in Ettal, opposite of the monastery and my first impression was The hairstyle of the girl was sponsored by the monastery ;-)

Mathias Klotz from Mittenwald went to Italy in order to learn the profession of building violins in Padua. He returned to Mittenwald in 1684 and this was the start for the violin-production in Mittenwald that is still continued nowadays. In many places of Mittenwald you will see sculptures, paintings etc. with violins, you just have to keep your eyes open...
In my last picture: Mathias Klotz with his violin as a sculpture in front of the church.

When you come around X-mas, make sure you dont miss to take a look inside the church for this unique Christmas crib / Weihnachtskrippe inside the church of Mittenwald ! The houses and persons in this crib dont look tyrolean or bavarian like in other cribs of that area, but the houses rather look around the real places in Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

In Mittenwald you will still find a lot of great guild-signs when you take a walk through the village. In the beginning these guild-signs were ment for the poor part of the population, who mostly were unable to read inscriptions, but they could of course understand symbols and sculptures etc.

Lüftlmalerei is the expression for that special kind of paintings and frescoes that you will find in the house-facades in many villages of southern Bavaria.
This technique goes back to the 17th century and was strongly influenced by italian painters. Franz Seraph Zwinck (1748-1792) from Oberammergau was one of the most famous Lüftlmalerei-artists.
You will find the best examples of Lüftelmalerei in Oberammergau and Mittenwald.
