A brave surfer in Munich's Englischer Garten

Favorite thing: On a cold winter's day in January 2011, with a layer of snow on the ground, we stopped to watch two brave souls who were surfing on an artificial wave in the river within the grounds of Munich's Englischer Garten.

We had read in our guidebook that surfers could often be found here, but didn't expect to find any there in the depths of winter!

As the two intrepid surfers attempted to keep their balance, they were pelted with snowballs thrown by their friends who were watching from a bridge overlooking the river. They even managed to catch some of the projectiles and throw them back...all the while maintaining their balance as they rode the wave!

It was an entertaining spectacle and we stayed to watch for quite some time. Each of the two surfers lost their balance and plunged head first into the river on dozens of occasions - but each time they climbed back onto the banks of the river before immediately jumping back into the wave.

I've uploaded a short video of the surfers on my Munich page if you are interested in seeing them in action.

    Cabarets and Englischer Gardens

Favorite thing: One day I wandered into a cabaret in Munich. One of the places with dancers. Nothing was going on because it was off season and early on a Wednesday. There were several workers there though. I practiced my Italian with an Italian girl, my Korean with a Thai girl who spoke Korean and my few words of other languages when I could. I invited the Italian girl to lunch the next day and she agreed. Later we went to Englischer Gardens (the clothing optional part) with several of her friends. Very UN. We had one American (me), one Italian (her), one Thai, one Brazilian, one Finn, one French girl, and two Germans. Fun!

Monopterus Temple in the Englischer Garten

Favorite thing: Munich is known as one of Europe's greenest cities.

The Englischer Garten is Munich's biggest city park. In fact, it is supposed to be Europe's biggest city park and often compared to New York City's Central Park.
Just that they don't have many huge beer gardens in the Central Park :)

The giant Englischer Garten also boasts lakes, rivers, streams and all kinds of leisure activities. It offers fantastic views of the historic skyline.

This is surely one of Munich's most favorite places and always relatively crowded, especially in the southern part.

Favorite thing: You surely have to sit down in a beergarden in the 'Englischen Garten' for a Mass, one liter of delicious beer! Or try a Weizenbier!

Fondest memory: My fever! The heat in that week didn´t made it easier!
