Marienplatz--great shops, entertainment.
Fondest memory: This at Fasching in Munich was jam packed but fun. Years ago was in the Munich marathon. Much to do and see. Also, flying into Munich airport is now a breeze and much easier than Frankfurt
Two main things to see in Munich are, of course, Marienplatz and Frauenkirche. On most postcards you find either Dom or Townhalls ('old' and 'new'), the only exception I can admit is Octoberfest, but it is a season thing, and mostly a cultural event, not the city sightseeing. This is a photo of Marienplatz.
Fondest memory: Marienplatz is a magneto - all tourist roads lead to this square.
Take a stroll down the Marienplatz.
Fondest memory: As much of a tourist trap as it seems, we enjoyed watching the clock tower when it struck the hour. I'm not sure I can explain it, but this is a 10-minute event. The clock chimes a song while life-sized figures spin around in the center of the tower. I've heard that someone had the opportunity to actually ride on one of the mechanical horses, just like a merry-go-round, but that could have been a rumor.
To be honest, I don't even know the name of this building. I want to say it was the Glockenschpiel -- I know that must be misspelled (someone please tell me the real spelling). But I can't be sure what it was called. I just know it was a great site to see. The picture is of the back of the tower.
Favorite thing: I enjoyed listening to the Khukh Mongol Musicians - it does seem that there are so many interesting street musicians of all styles performing.
Favorite thing: Go to Marienplatz. Seen here is a detail from the famous Neues Rathaus. Check out the travelogue for more.
This is Munich's central square, the Marienplatz with the Neo-Gothic Town Hall around 1900.
It still looks the same today, except for the railroad tracks running through it.
Fondest memory: Enjoying another bier while gazing at the beauty of this kirche as passer's-by entertain the people-watching crowds in Marienplatz.
Fondest memory: My favorite memory of munich was at Christmas time. Visiting Marienplatz at night with the Christmas market all set up. Music playing and the smell of hot cinnimon nuts everywhere
