    Maypole at Viktualmarkt

Favorite thing: Shopping galore in this treasure rich site.

Notice the blue and white decorated maypole in this picture... I don't think anyone's going to try taking that one, but the bavarian countryside is dotted with them. Residents often guard these highly prized maypoles from their neighbors. Its a local custom surely enjoyed by those who honor its symbol in fine traditional revelry.

    Viktualienmarkt

Favorite thing: Visit Viktualienmarkt, a huge food market. Shown here, one of the restaurants at the market. See more in the travelogue or have a look at this Viktualienmarkt WebCam.

    If the weather isn't nice...

Favorite thing: If the weather isn't nice enough to sit out in the beer gardens there are some great pubs. We found the staff very friendly and the beer tasty at the Lowenbrau pub at the side of the food market (Viktualienmarkt).

    Go to the Viktualienmarkt!...

Favorite thing: Go to the Viktualienmarkt! Only, don't touch anything! Point to the fruit or vegetable you want and the vendor will weigh and price it for you. (When you think about it, this way really is much more sanitary). Even if you don't want to buy anthing, it is nice to stroll around and watch. Get lost and find your way back again. That is a great way to enjoy munich. You can't go to visit Munich without getting a beer at the Hofbrau Haus. There is a fantastic old-OLD restaurant over by the Opera house. It is off of Maximillian Strasse -- been there since the 1400's. Grab a meal there. The sauerkraut is awesome! Walk up and down Maximilliam Strasse and gawk in all of the fancy-schmancy windows. There is a park that is away from the hustle and bustle of the city over in that area. If it is a sunny day -- go and relax on the grass for a while.

Fondest memory: I miss shopping in the Marienplatz. I miss grabbing lunch from a quick vendor and sitting down on the ground and eating in the sun. I miss the beautiful churches. I discovered something new each time I went to Munich (and I went all the time).

  • When in Munich you must take...

Favorite thing: When in Munich you must take some time just to explore the city - go to the Victualian Markt just of Marienplatz to try some real and good Bavarian food. Wander round the smaller streets - check out all the little churches and towers. Just spend some time absorbing what Munich is about. And of course don't forget to fit in the odd Brauhaus or Biergarten

Fondest memory: What i will miss most about Munich when i leave will be the lovely small town feeling that this big place has. It is normal forlocals to just start up conversation with you (outside the tourist areas of course) and everyone seems to have an overwhelming pride for their city - i think this is a trait of Bavaria in general.
